Chargers reporter says what Cowboys fans already knew about Trey Lance

The article's title is factually incorrect. Some Cowboys fans already knew about Trey Lance before the Mad Genius claimed him from San Francisco. And stated it on this forum at the time when the trade was orchestrated.
But then why would the GM who's supposed to be better than ours and a head coach who's supposed to be smart and hardnosed give him a contract that size, that is not the veteran minimum??

It looks like he gets $2 million as long as he makes all the offseason stuff and makes the roster he gets one million I guess if he's cut but he can earn up to 6 million if he ends up starting a bunch of games and meeting a bunch of criteria which I doubt that happens that's still a nice contract for a player everybody knows his garbage according to everyone around in here everybody knows everything except for teams keep giving guys new money....

I mean if everybody knows all this stuff, then why do people keep giving players like this 2nd chances and in his case the 3rd chance?

it happens, especially in a QB starved league.

they are hoping the payer bounces back like Darnold, Geno smith, and to some extent Baker..

Not defending Lance at all, but I have no idea why he didn't get more than one start last season.

Once Dak got hurt the Cowboys suffered back to back blowout losses to the Texans and Eagles that dropped them to 3-7. The season was toast at that point. There was no reason to keep playing Rush when everyone already knew what he was.

Not saying Lance would have improved with more reps. Just saying that now we will never know if he would have.
Yeah I was really baffled that they just continued to start Rush. Season was over. Worse case scenario, we get better draft positions. Best case scenario, something positive clicks for Lance.

Coach/Superscout Jerry Jones thought he saw “value,” and maybe he could scare Dak into taking a few million less, as if it would have mattered.

There’s no way it ever could have, and just another example of how in over their heads this family is trying to build an NFL roster.

I have virtually ZERO doubt that at least one of the fourth round RBs taken this past year will have a much better career than Mingo, but GM Jerry saw “value” again.

Cowboys didn’t even try to develop Lance….no reason at all for Rush to be getting playing time over him.
Sometimes the coaches in the building just know what they have and what they don’t. When a QB Whisperer that’s been known to make chicken salad out of chicken - - - - says ‘no thanks’ to a guy, he just might be a bust.

To quote the great Jeff Foxworthy… If directions to your house includes the phrase “when you turn off the dirt road”, you might be a redneck…

This sounds all to familiar to Cowboys fans.

The Dallas Cowboys made a gamble when they sent a fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for quarterback Trey Lance. It was seen as a worthwhile investment in a potential lottery ticket, but it didn't take long to come to the realization that Lance wouldn't pan out.

Lance signed a one-year pact with the Chargers this offseason following a two-year stint with the Cowboys. The former No. 3 overall pick is hoping to get his career off the ground, but he will have to prove himself under a hard-nosed head coach like Jim Harbaugh.

Unfortunately for Lance, his performance in offseason workouts has left something to be desired. The following quote from The Athletic's Daniel Popper will sound familiar to Cowboys fans.

That’s not how the NFL works though. Mike had no intentions of developing Lance because he was coaching got his job. His main focus was on his own job. This is why you don’t have a whole staff on one year deals…..

This same head coach sat Dowdle their best running back at home in favor of Zeke. So you have to forgive me if I don’t trust the coaching staff that would’ve never played Micah at edge rush if not for D law getting hurt.

This is a pivot. My post pointed out the article's generalization of fans was incorrect.

You are correct about the NFL is quarterback starved. This thread is about Trey Lance. Here is another example of teams' attempt to satiate their quarterback needs--especially depth at the position.

Joe Flacco spent 11 seasons in Baltimore. Then he went to Denver. Then to the Jets. The Browns basically signed him off his couch. He was with Indianapolis last season. Flacco has bounced from team-to-team due to teams' hoping to strengthen their quarterback bench.

Let's get back to your making a parallel of Jerry Jones' actions as general manager to Joe Hortiz's. Additionally, 'boosting' your opinion mentioning Jim Harbaugh also.

Hortiz and Harbaugh collectively (link) acquired Trey Lance to compete at the position. I doubt Lance will successfully challenge Justin Herbert (personally I do not believe he has a chance in hell), but this move by the Chargers is typical (pro and college) Harbaugh.

Mike McCarthy (and Jones) never placed Lance in any position to compete at quarterback. In any capacity. Not even pretend competition. I have always speculated it was never Jones' intention for Lance to compete against Dak Prescott. My opinion has always been Jones acquired Lance to eventually succeed Prescott if he permanently lost Prescott at some point over the short-term.

No GM is perfect. Howie Boseman is not perfect. More power to Hortiz taking a chance on Lance but his actions to secure Lance was planned between Harbaugh and himself. Jones went Lone Wolf and grabbed Lance, without much input from McCarthy.

I have no idea where Hortiz's career will take him. It may soar. It may go down in flames. I would take Hortiz's insight, accumulated over DECADES of real NFL experience BEFORE being named as a GM, taking over Jones' GM position YESTERDAY.

I’m sorry… But that is how the NFL usually works. It may not work that way in Dallas, but it is the way it works for competent front offices. I really doubt there were many other teams interested in Trey Lance after Shanahan said no thank you.

You cannot look at the way the Dallas Cowboys are run and compare it to the rest of the league. Mike McCarthy was not coaching for his job… He obviously could’ve kept it if he wanted to…But he decided to walk away because they could not agree on the length. It wasn’t worth it to him to stay.

They spent a 4th on him. They missed. Looks good this time (Milton) shut happens

The article says that Lance threw 5 interceptions in his last game with Dallas. That is not true. He played the last game of the season and had 0 interceptions in that game.
He is referencing the last preseason game last year when Lance threw five interceptions against the Chargers.

Huh lol? We are talking about the Cowboys we aren’t talking about competent front offices. I literally gave you examples of the Cowboys not playing guys because of youth or other circumstances and you want to ignore it.

And please. Cowboys were done with Mike the minute they had his whole staff on one year deals lol. You have to watch the Cowboys actions as opposed to what they say because they will tell you anything. They will feed you that they couldn’t agree on terms…but the fact is that’s crap because 1. Nobody wants to hire Mike and 2. No one lets years stop them from signing a contract especially Jerry Jones. They may have a crap front office but everything is intentional.

We can agree to disagree on McCarthy… If he wanted to be there, under Jerry’s terms, he still would be

All we ever hear with Lance is he hasn’t played enough football. He can’t play! His next stop will be the UFL.
I think that's where he should have gone this year. Get some game experience and prove whether an NFL team should give him another chance. He sidestepped it again because a team sees his arm strength and overall ability and decide to give him a chance, but he needs playing time if he's ever going to develop.

The UFL is the last resort. The Chargers are giving him an opportunity and if he were to somehow get the backup job, which isn’t looking very good right now and Herbert were to get injured it would give him a chance to play. Plus even backup money in the NFL is a lot better than starting money in the UFL. The average salary for a starting QB in the UFL $62,000.

The game before is when those 5 interceptions were committed by Trey Lance, and we all know it. No need to keep covering up or making excuses for that JAG bum who can't even beat out a 2nd string QB with 3 different teams.

Trey Lance would have had immense value in Dallas as a proper tank QB.
Too bad they didn't go to him early.
The NFL would have done an investigation if the Cowboys propped Lance out there as a starter. The tank job would have been to obvious. We would have been better to call up Woody Dantzler out of retirement and ask him to switch back to QB.

..."but but but he just needs playing time to be above average. we should give him a chance and he could be our future QB!!!! because we hate Dak, we cling to crap!!!"
