The year is 1976. I live in a cul de sac in Northern Ca. My first best friend is a Mexican boy name Joel Villagomez. He was a Raiders fan. His parents didnt speak much English, but they made the best Root Beer Floats. We would play football in the street. We both had old football helmets that we painted silver and put our team's logo on. It snowed in NorCal and we ran out into his backyard to play 1 on 1 tackle football in the snow.

This old guy lived in the corner of our cul-de-sac. Looking back, Im guessing he was maybe in his late 50s early 60s. I think he was a Korean war vet. Im barely 6 years old. Somehow, he invites me and my 9 year old friend into his house to watch football. He cooks us lunch and he gives us Dr. Peppers. When we were ready for another, me and my friend would sing the Dr. Pepper song from the commercials..... Im a pepper, hes a pepper, shes a pepper, we're a pepper woulnt you like to be a pepper to? Today, people would have looked at the guy like he was a child molester. I think he was just a lonely old vet and he enjoyed having a couple of kids around to share football with. It really was the start of my love of the NFL. We would go to his house every Sunday for 2 seasons.

Next year, I watch the Cowboys win SB12 against the Orange Crush, Denver Broncos. I am hooked, and I am now officially married to the Dallas Cowboys.
1981, Cowboys lose to the NIners in the NFC title game. Im crushed.

Fast Fowrad to 1991. Im living in North Carolina as I am in the Marine Corps. My father-in-law tries to get me tickets for the Giants game in Jersey, but the Giants are coming off a SB winning season, and he cant do it. We had no internet and no secondary market then. So, he gets me tickets to week 15 in Philly. My wife is from Jersey, so she has a lot of family up there. Her uncle agrees to go to the game with me. Now these tickets were bought in Sept. Nobody knew then the significance of this game. A few weeks before the game, my wife's uncles reminds me it is his son's first birthday.... and he cant go. I drive to jersey and stay with family. I then drive to Veterans stadium by myself. I arrive early and park in the street. I get out of my car wearing my Cowboys hat and sweatshirt. I guy just parking his car behind me pops off.. oh great, a Cowboys fan!. This guy walks me to the parking lot and proceeds to feed me and give me some beers at his tailgate. He walks me inside the stadium and shows me where my seats are. An 83 yard Kelvin Martin punt return and we are headed to the playoffs for the first time under Jimmy Johnson.

6 months later I get out of the Marine Corps and return to NorCal to start college. We make the playoffs and are playing filly. Once it was clear we were moving on to play sf the following week, I grab the previous days paper and look in the classifieds. I find someone who was selling tickets for the niners divisional rd game. I call them on the phone and ask if they are selling tickets for next weeks NFC title game. Im in luck... 150 bucks each and I buy 4 tickets.

I work a part time job at Good Guys. They sell all sorts of stuff. My manager knows im going to the game, so he gets ame a kick arse camera from the display case, rings me up as a buyer and tells me to return it after the game. I have no clue how to take pictures with this thing. But, look at my profile pic.... I snapped that as Emmitt was crossing the goal line. 2 niners fans and 2 Cowboys fans were in my car that day. It was a long drive home for the niners fans.

Fast forward to 2008. It is Texas Stadium's last season. Ive been watching games on Tv at this place my entire life. My wife surprises me with tickets to the season opener against Philly. Its Monday night football. The players are coming onto the field with fireworks going off. Im standing there watching this with tears coming down my face. Im as emotional as Ive ever been. My entire childhood is flashing before my eyes. I can not believe I am here. I can not believe im in the stadium where Roger, Tony, Drew and all the other guys I worshiped had played. Wow... my wife is the best ever. I share this experience with my wife and oldest daughter, who is as big a fan as I am. It was incredible.

Thats all it took to create a family tradition. Since the game in 2008, we have been to almost every season opener at home, minus covid seasons. The tradition continues in a couple of weeks as me and my daughter will fly out from Norcal. We have met some great friends along the way that we share the opener with each season.

So this is why I am all about the team. This is why my love for this team is more than any player, or owner. This team is a part of who I am , who my family is. I couldnt walk away if I tried. I am now 55 years old and anxiously awaiting another season. Another opener, and the continuation of a shared love of the NFL and the Cowboys with my daughter.

Here is to another great season...
Good for you and your wife....they don't deserve you

Players are not claimed to practice squads. They are free agents that choose where they want to sign.
I'm talking about him either clearing waivers or getting claimed off waivers. Noon today is the deadline for him since he was released yesterday.
and yes, if a team claims him, they can put him on their practice squad.

Some players, namely vested veterans, do not have to be exposed to or abide by waiver claims. But in this case, Zion Childress, he is not, and can be claimed by any team.

I think at the time it was only 5-7M less than a top DE.
I’m not sure but top money then and now is drastically different. The league revenue has soared. As long as revenue keeps growing, what a record contract will keep changing. For now that is sustainable. But the day they top out revenue, you’ve maxed out every source from stream, TV and all other sources, then complete havoc will happen. For now growth is set for years but at some point that revenue is gonna max out. Broadcasters, be they streaming or tv don’t really make money off football. It’s just an audience drawer for them. There’s not enough ad space to sell to cover the cost. The revenue growth won’t last forever

As the Dallas Cowboys navigate a tense contract dispute with star linebacker Micah Parsons, the situation has become increasingly complicated. With the regular season approaching, both sides appear to be at an impasse. ESPN analysts suggest that the franchise could ultimately call Parsons’ bluff, especially if he decides to hold out in hopes of securing a better deal.

Parsons has been vocal about his desire for a contract extension, but Dallas have not budged. Owner Jerry Jones has indicated that the team is prepared to keep Parsons under the franchise tag for another year, which could lead to mounting frustration for the player. Analysts believe that Parsons’ absence from practice and games could result in substantial financial losses, making it risky for him to continue his holdout.

If he's better than a player on the Cowboys' 53, can't they sign him off the Ravens' PS for their 53 and cut the lesser player?

The Cowboys need better DT's.
Yeah, but that's the thing most of us have looked at those short videos and he doesn't look better than Toia, They look the same as far as their game goes they're both young inexperienced and learning they're both big I mean toia is like 340,, just because he's 370 pounds and big doesn't make him better, he landed on someone's practice squad for a reason, he cleared waivers for a reason...

I mean everyone's saying he's better but where's all the proof just because he's big I sometimes people fall in love with oh the nose tackle needs to be really fat well that's the reason that guy what was it in Tampa Bay cut that dude that was like 400 plus pounds they've been making him lose weight all off season and they cut him...

That's up for debate I'll leave it up to the coaches they know where these guys are trust me they have a big list of players they're interested in and they'll be making small moves all the way up until game day So the bottom of this roster is going to be churned but if he's not better that's your answer...

Technically we only have two PURE nose tackles I believe that would be Mazi and Toia that will be on the active roster with winfrey can play that position but I believe he's a bit smaller..

Thing is I know people around here enamored with that but you realize they're not on the field all game they'll be rotated out for different packages and groupings up front Most of the time you're only using a nose tackle maybe half of your defensive front be depending on who you're playing and what they're doing to you and what you need to do to stop it..

They won’t listen to logic.
Correct impact they see this dude from the Ravens because he's big but when you look at his tape he looks solid but he doesn't look better than anything we have on our team so why would you make a change just simply to make a change?

I guarantee you that a Micah contract will destroy this roster and the fallout from those 4 contracts I mentioned will be felt for a decade.

You think they do the bare minimum now? You ain’t seen nothing yet.
It amazes me people still fall for the hard cap nonsense. Yes they will use his contract as an excuse. No, it won't change anything with FA going forward. Extend him or trade him, we will continue to be ultra conservative with outside free agents. How much more evidence do you need?

Looking at the practice I believe believe they have to be bringing in a DT1
There's a lot more moves that are gonna be made because I know they're gonna try to bring back Childress and what not they made a couple moves to clear a spot now they have to clear waivers so yeah this is gonna be an ongoing thing at least into next week turning the bottom of this roster and the practice squad..

Are those Indian trading beads?

Its cuts both ways. They do get massive portions of their contracts guaranteed and often not live up to expectations. History is littered with Albert Haynesworth type players.
True, but I can’t think of guys on a HoF trajectory that got paid on their second contract and then wasn’t worth it.

Many of those are so close that it is just irrelevant. If a team with an average age of 26 (9th youngest) cuts a 36 year old kicker and signs a 21 year old they drop to the 3rd youngest team but it is completely meaningless in pretty much every way from a football perspective

I never got to see the Cowboys in person. And, like you said, back then there was no internet, no Sports Center, no NFL Network.
I was stuck with any book I could find about the Dallas Cowboys.
Like you, watching the Cowboys crush Denver was my 70' highlight. Before that it was Cowboys/Commanders games on television and Cowboys/Vikings games that kept me going.
Then there was Danny White. He brought the Cowboys back against the Falcons with the game seemingly lost, and that pass to Drew Pearson was enough to make me a lifelong fan of Danny.
The eighties stunk. We all knew Landry was tired.
But when Jerry Jones hired Jimmy Johnson, I knew the Cowboys were back. I knew Jimmy was the kind of guy who would demand that the Cowboys would reach their very best.
Since 1994 it's been a down hill slide, but at least we got one more Super Bowl win- against the Steelers!
For a while, all was right with the world.
But after 13 years of Garrett, and now 9 years of Dak, I know that the Cowboys I grew up loving are no more.

The Cowboys’ season begins a week from Thursday in Philadelphia, and as the days dwindle, it looks less likely that Parsons will show up and play. Don’t expect a last-minute Hail Mary like the deal Dallas did with QB Dak Prescott on the morning of last season’s opener.

Prescott was practicing, and the two sides had been talking. This thing seems a lot more frosty, and Jones appears dug in. Unless Parsons relents and instructs his agent to get a deal done even if it’s on the team’s terms, it’s hard to imagine him getting his extension before the season starts.

So then Parsons has a choice to make: play on his current contract or not, with the Cowboys openly holding the threat of a 2026 franchise tag over him.

The Cowboys’ decision to potentially call Parsons’ bluff may redefine the relationship between the player and the franchise moving forward.
