Schottenheimer: Open competition at RT

I wonder if Steele has any value if he was moved inside to Guard. He's basically a turnstile at tackle

I know people are tired of us drafting Offensive Linemen in the 1st rd but if there's a left tackle available, that would be a good pick IMO. Left tackle is one of the 5 most important positions (QB, pass rusher, #1 WR, LT, #1 CB) on the field and Tyler Guyton is ***. Maybe Guyton and Thomas can compete for RT next year.
I’m totally against this. Drafting Oline in the First and missing in the 2nd got Dallas nowhere. Smith,Martin and Fredrick. BPA in a position of need is the best policy. Oline goes behind LB, edge, CB,Safety,RB, and WR if Pickens is gone.

Agreed. All of this.

Guess this pretty much confirms Dallas is getting out from under Terence Steele's contract this offseason, unless he agrees to a pay cut to stick around as the swing tackle.

With the 2nd 1stvround pick in nfl draft the Dallas Cowboys select Tackle of your choice..

These two statements are contradicting.
Yeah. If the next Tom Brady or Pat Mahomes is on the clock we definitely need to turn them down to draft a stiff at a position of need. Who needs talent?

We are paying Tyler Smith tackle money. Kick him out to LT, and plug someone in at LG. Play the best player at RT.

More importantly play the best player at every position. Lol
Good call.
Your advice won't be followed because of Cowboy team politics.
But its a sound team strategy regardless.

I believe during Shotty's tutelage under Carroll at Seattle, he saw on a Tuesday or Wednesday practice day that a player could earn snaps/possibly replace the starter based on open competition for that spot.

Don't know if Carroll still does that with the Raiders.

He was never more than a swing tackle. The fact Jerry felt the need to throw that extension at him was mind blowing.

This, I would get the 5 best guys on the field.

Tyler Smith LT, Bass at LG, BeeBee Center, Booker RG, and Guyton or whoever wins the RT at RT (Guyton, Hakeem Adeniji, Nate Thomas).

Our tackle play hasn't changed from last season (We should have made a move in the offseason). But Guyton and Steele are both terrible especially pass blocking. It's wild we went into the season thinking Steele was going to get better. I could see them thinking Guyton would get better due to him being in the second year of his NFL career, but man both are just bad. Part of the reason why our offense look stale the past 2 games.

The only thing that Terence Steele is at tackle is a swinging gate. He's not a swing tackle - he's not even competent at RT.

Yep, Guyton not improving.
Heck, regressing even.
And all everybody wants to talk about is poor right tackle play.
BOTH suck as pass blockers.
