Schottenheimer: Open competition at RT

We are paying Tyler Smith tackle money. Kick him out to LT, and plug someone in at LG. Play the best player at RT.

More importantly play the best player at every position. Lol
Pickens to play CB?

Not saying I advocate for it lol I want Defense both picks
I agree we need defense.

We also need to protect an aging QB and continue to improve our running game. Best defense is a ball control offense and games are still won in the trenches.

I still prefer drafting the best player available. We have lots of needs, no reason to force a pick.

I believe we are better off trading Pickens. He is an unbelievable talent, but he is also a luxury I don't believe we can afford to keep and fill all the holes we still have to make a SB run.

I also don't believe Jerry Will free up the cap space to make it all happen.

Guess this pretty much confirms Dallas is getting out from under Terence Steele's contract this offseason, unless he agrees to a pay cut to stick around as the swing tackle.
No need for him to stick around

Francis Mauigoa, OT, Miami

Mauigoa's brand of bully ball should make him sufficiently attractive for the Cowboys, with his stout protection also coming in handy to counter the NFC's many imposing pass rushers.

I would happily take him at the 10-12 range if still available.
He is a beast. if you solve some on the D issues in free agency it frees you to take him if there and would be your starting LT for the next 10-15 years.

Unfortunately, that guy is going to end up being a top 5-8 pick. The only hope of him being around 10-12 is because he is a RT.

I know people are tired of us drafting Offensive Linemen in the 1st rd but if there's a left tackle available, that would be a good pick IMO. Left tackle is one of the 5 most important positions (QB, pass rusher, #1 WR, LT, #1 CB) on the field and Tyler Guyton is ***. Maybe Guyton and Thomas can compete for RT next year.
I understand the thought and it depends on the draft board and bpa. However with no day 2 picks and defensive needs they really need 2 defensive players in round 1. However, if the player at LT is clearly the best player I think they have to consider it or trading back to see if they can get an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick. If they did that and had the day 2 pick I think that would make drafting a tackle in round 1 more palatable.

I'd love for us to get him! He'd be a monster. Though we also need LB and safety.

This would be ideal. If we can sign a really good linebacker in the offseason (as well as extending Williams and maybe Pickens), then I think we can get him, a safety, and a pass rusher.

Would you trade Pickens for Tennessee's first overall pick in the round 2?

This would give you options in Free Agency?

- WR, LB, Safety, OT + top pick in round 2.

Yeah, I'd trade Pickens for that. Especially if we can get some more help on defence. We'd just need a decent 2 WR in FA if we do that.

Forget it, brother. Francis Mauigoa is getting overhyped and will be the first O-Tackle drafted and will likely go Top 5-8 overall. With the Cowboys continuing to fight to win games, they won't have a chance at Mauigoa. Plus, it would be dumb to sacrifice both 1st round picks to move up to get Mauigoa so high, especially since the Cowboys don't have a 2nd or 3rd round picks.

Francis Mauigoa Offensive Tackle Miami | NFL Draft Profile & Scouting Report https://************/5euYlf1oI4rGPAtBp

Check out his film breakdown.

Francis Mauigoa is pretty good but does have some concerns. For starters, he has short arms, and that might force him to be moved to Guard at the NFL level. We need a legit Tackle. Not a Guard. Secondly, he does play high and at times a bit stiff. Lastly, he has been beat a few times with bullrushes, hence questioning his lower body/core strength, playing too high at times and also playing stiff at times. That might make him drop out of the Top 10, but he really looks more like an NFL Guard than a Tackle. We need a legit Tackle with long arms, big strong hands and the ability to anchor and protect the edge while being able to dominate both the pass and the run. Mauigoa might not be the player we need.

"will be"?

There should be an open competition at all positions all the time.
yes because we all know that's exactly how teams work in the NFL. If he said that it would be lip service just as you saying it should be that way.

Trading Pickens could open the door to signing Trey Hendrickson. Now that would be a SB contending DLine.

I'd love that. That'd be tremendous. Though we should get a decent 2 WR as well if we do trade away Pickens. Tolbert ain't it lol.
