Tyler Smith to meet with Schottenheimer about his future

The Cowboys used a 1st round pick on Guyton to play LT. Tyler Smith is already an all-pro LG.

Are the Cowboys planning to cut Steele and move Guyton back to RT? Or are they planning to use a 1st on a RT (hope not).

Even then, it makes no sense:

1) Tyler Smith does not have all pro talent at LT, but he does at LG. Why purposely get worse at LG only to get marginally better (maybe?) at LT?

2) Guyton has more reps at LT as a pro than he did at OU as a RT.

3) The premium draft picks needs to go on elite defenders. The offense is fine as is.

Please leave Tyler Smith where he is.

While you make a very credible case here the counter is that Guyton is not an NFL starting left tackle.

So the options the team is left with are either moving Smith to LT, using your second first rd pick on a LT or acquiring a pricey FA LT.

It really is one of those 3 options.
NOT Guyton and NOT Thomas.

I called that one years ago.

Sign him at guard money then move him to LT.

No one outsmarts the Joneses.

Yes. I would like a cookie. Thank you.

Well they have no LT as of right now. They very likely won't draft one until possibly their 4th round pick as both 1st rounders will go to defense. So that leaves FA and there is 0 chance of them finding a starter at LT there.

Trade? possible they throw out the 2027 2nd or 1st for one, but that is a long shot. So they will go with the tried and true practice of starting Guyton, unless they do this with Tyler.
I think FANS want to go defense with both FRPs. The board is somewhat unlikely to shake out that way with BPA being a defender for both picks.

I think it’s somewhat unlikely that both picks get used in defense and I think the board is going to melt down when that happens.

I think having him as an option at LT allows the team to address the defense through free agency and the draft. It's more affordable to move Smith out wide and moving Guyton to the right side. Serviceable guards are relatively cheap. Otherwise they're looking at either spending big on OT in free agency or using one of those 1st round picks on a tackle. I'm not convinced that they're locked in on the move, but having a fallback option removes the necessity to throw premium assets at the position.

I do

The move is 2 years too late and reeks of the Jones boys looking for a deal. It is just another example of how badly run this joke of a franchise is. I am for Steele being cut and moving Guyton because RT is his only chance. Smith is a G. They made that decision years ago.

You play him at LG,

1. It's his natural position.
2. He said he wants to play there
3. Our run game benefitted from having a solid inside run game with him, Beebe and Booker.
4. He will commit way more penalties at LT

Guyton was doing OK at LT imo before he got hurt, he just has to stay healthy.
We CANNOT invest a top pick on OL again.

No need. You can't have all pros at every position.

His pay is right about where the top 5 OT's in the NFL are.

If he has any qualms with moving to LT, pay shouldnt be among them
Top 5 ain't highest paid, which he is as a Guard. If you now want me to move to a higher skilled position when I'm top paid at my lower one, what's the incentive?

You know its bad when the HC can’t even define the position for one of the best players on his team.

You put people where they can shine. It’s management 101.
He did, he put him at LT. Watch the games instead of wasting time in the game thread.

Maybe the most overrated player on the team. No, he shouldn't be an OT, he can't handle elite passrushers. Inconsistent, IIRC, the 2nd most penalized player since he came into the league. Not even close to being what Zack Martin was.

A pretty good player, but by no measure should he be anything close to the highest paid OG. Overpaying guys like him is why Jones whines about the salaries and trades his best player for relative peanuts.

Sure it is. They want a cheap left tackle. That guy signed a guard contract. Everyone sees what they are trying to pull. This stupidity has Stephen Jones written all over it.
If this were truly the case, then they wouldn't have drafted Guyton. He just hasn't worked out like they hoped.

He got a contract that still pays him top 5 OT money.

LT is the high recognition position. Usually the best player on the line. He should embrace the move. Not like he hasnt played there before. Not like he cant do it.

Blancing out the oline salary wise is required.

Smith at LT
Bass at LG
Beebe
Booker
And then try Guyton at RT replacing Steele and his contract.

Smart move. Thats why they'll probably not do it.

Why is he going go ask the Head Coach about any of this? Jerry is the one who will make that decision. He makes all of the decisions.

He has a chance to be an eventual HOF at LG
he was already getting lots of pay there
meanwhile he is only GOOD at LT
you might want to think about that
I don't see him in the HoF based on his career so far. He's good but he might be one of those guys who it just a notch below HoF good. Nate Newton was a 6 time pro-bowl OG and he is not in the HoF. I am not sure Tyler Smith is as good as Nate Newton.

However, this isn't about what I think. It's about what Tyler Smith thinks. I would prefer he just did what was best for the team and if I was the head coach I would tell him you play where we need you most to make the team better. But I guess there is no harm in the two sides talking.

Damn right. Pay him at a lower pay grade then move him up to a higher pay grade without a pay adjustment? Make sure the agent is there too.
Screw that. You are getting paid to play, regardless. If you end up getting moved to a different position with a different pay grade then you deal with that on the next contract. These whiny *** players these days are ridiculous. Does the contract you signed say you only play left guard?
