Jerry and Stephen's biggest fear about Free Agency

The Cowboys biggest need is defense. Without question, the best free agent acquisition that could help the Cowboys the most is edge rusher Boye Mafe. Trust me on this. Mafe is a STUD and he just finished a season at Mike Macdonald University. If the Cowboys don't get him, the Chiefs most certainly will because they offered the Seahawks a King's ransom for Mafe at the trade deadline, but John Schneider nixed the idea because he felt that quality edge depth was needed insurance for a championship run. In other words, the Seahawks were trade deadline buyers, not sellers. Now, the Chiefs are salivating over the prospect of acquiring Mafe without yielding any draft compensation at all.

The bottom line is this: If the Cowboys are serious about making an impactful change on defense, they will prove it to me by at least making a serious offer to Boye Mafe.

you’re 100% right. The cowboys need to upgrade their defense if they want even the slightest chance of winning the big one.

This is why I said the cowboys should consider signing Akwasi Owusu Ansah. Watch his highlights when he was at IUP and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. So much talent, so much character - all the intangibles in the world. Go get ‘em Jerry!

I think some of you WAY UNDERESTIMATE the “we like our guys” mantra. The Cowboys far overvalue their own. We tend to WAY overpay our own people.

Jerry isn’t cheap AT ALL. He’s just blinded by the idea we need to keep our own in house and he is scared to death that a player will get away from us and we will rue the day it happened.
 
Your biggest fear should be Pickens agent reaction when you slap that franchise tag on him. You're headed for another #11 situation.

My wish would be a 2 year bridge vet left tackle free agent better than Chuma Edoga to enable the entire draft to be defensive focused.

Look at Philip Rivers for example. The man was out of the league for years but then showed up all of a sudden to take the league by storm.

Chief among them is Akwasi Owusu Ansah. Akwasi has all the physical attributes to be a lockdown corner in this league. Everyone and their mothers believed he would be one of the premier players on this defense for many years to come. But unfortunately the coaches werent able to take advantage of his talent.

Jerry, if you’re lurking the board, please… lets go out there and get him. Give Akwasi another chance and watch the man shine. It will be the greatest move of the off-season, maybe of the decade. Hands down.

That’s what I’m saying brother. Everyone is sleeping on Akwasi Owusu Ansah.

The same way Philip River took the league by storm, Akwasi can do something very similar. Imagine if this defense had Akwasi starting from week 1 this past season. He can play strong safety, free safety, special teams - the whole gamut

Because they are not cheap. They gave their QB the highest contract for a QB. They made their No. 1 receiver the second-highest paid receiver. They gave Elliott an outrageous contract for a running back at the time.

That's why the Brandon Carr thing stands out. If they were cheap, they wouldn't even pay their own, but they do. They even trade for expensive players. They just don't pay any expensive outside free agents since Carr.

That's my thing on Carr. He wasn't a bad player. We didn't fail because of him, yet he seems to be the standard for the Joneses on not paying outside FAs.

First i have to disagree about Carr. Carr was a top CB. But he was forced to play in a scheme that wasnt made for his strengths. In fact it was his weaknesses he was forced to play into

And with this comes my point. Carr is an example that we arent able to scout players the right way. We are not good at it. Well honestly i think we are really bad there.

And this has effects on both FA and the draft. Now why are we so bad at scouting players? I think its a mixture of problems. Its that the scouts we pay are essentially put there by the Joneses. Which is not good. And then Jerry always wamt to have the last word. So even if we had good scouts if Jerry doesnt agree he will take a different player. That is not good too.

It is not good because Jerry has not the knowledge nor talent to make such decissions.

Now is Jerry anxious or does he think about that all? Maybe. But i dont think he is losing sleep over it or he thinks there needs to be a change. His businessplan is working out perfectly. The other stuff about football is just a necessary need. Its just an "accident" that he is now making money by selling a football brand. You dont need to have a clue about your product as long as you can sell it. And the people who pay for it are not very demanding too. In fact they tend to mangle their own community if things go south. So overall its a great situation for him.

I think this is part of the reason why the Joneses choose to reward their own with big contracts and go cheap in outside FA. They know what their own players can do in the system that's in place. They also know what kind of players they are, how they fit in with the team, etc.

Parsons is a good example of a player they wanted to sign but had doubts about as a team leader. He proved those doubts by his behavior last summer, the relationship fractured and they didn't re-sign him like they usually do their own stars.
 
Carr contract was bigger than Diggs

So don’t really make sense
 
Their biggest fear is grabbing what they need in free agency and not having a story about ignoring obvious holes
