Trade value for Pickens might not be what people are expecting

I think his value probably goes up on draft day. Teams that want a top receiver will hold out hope of getting one in the first round, but when their targets are gone, they'll come after Pickens, like Philly did AJ Brown. If Dallas wants to trade him, that would be the best time. However, I think Dallas would be stupid to trade him just to get a draft pick that it will have to use to replace him.

If Pickens was a top 7-8 pick in this years draft , he'd be making around $7 million a year. If he is tagged, he makes around $28 million. Teams take that into consideration when putting a trade value on players.

Once officially tagged, does the receiving team have to work out a long-term contract before the trade can be completed or do they just assume the one year tag and take their chances? Does that then mean Dallas must use the exclusive tag to trade him or can they use the non-exclusive?

I think the best option is non-exclusive tag him and let Pickens go determine his worth. Dallas gets picks if they don't want to match. Jerry doesn't seem to be good at exclusive negotiations.

When you hear that a player was tagged, it is almost always the non-exclusive version.

Yes, that’s true. But that ain’t stopping teams from asking for what they want. A prime example is Maxx Crosby. They want more than just two first-round picks and players, and they still have to pay his salary.

The Seahawks offered two first-rounders for him and they still turned them down. The Raiders are also getting inquiries from the Eagles.

So, if I were the Cowboys, I’d offer up as much as you can get for Pickens—not some silly second-round draft pick offer.

How do you know? Has the Cowboys asked for anything for Pickens? The Cowboys would be silly to trade Pickens for just a 2nd.

I think the other team has to give him a long-term contract. The tag is not transferrable...it's just a one year option for the tagging team. Without the tag he has no contract. Can't play without a contract. He has to sign the tag before he can be traded iirc. No team is going to give up (2) first rounders AND pay him 35 mil/yr. It's just not happening. The Cowboys will be lucky to get ONE first rounder for him in a trade.

Not ideal but if you can't parlay his 2025 season into a least one first rounder then it's probably not enough compensation UNLESS you can somehow package him in a trade for another player from another team. Most content creators have been going on about a potential trade for Max Crosby, even though that guy will be unrestricted and therefore free to extract the maximum when it comes to remuneration.

But giving up a first and paying him a "potentially" market-setting contract seems like a bridge that is past desperation. It may also be that no team will want to go there on the AFC side where he's more well known.

Crosby is on a different level than Pickens. Pickens is borderline cancerous to a locker room and had one breakout season. Crosby is one of the best defensive players and best leaders in the league. A better comparison for Crosby would be if we were shopping CeeDee not Pickens.

If what OP says is true .....my guess is that Pickens will gladly accept the tag or it makes a long-term agreement easier.

Trust me ..........his agents know exactly his value is. 100% confident he has privately ( text/3rd party talk) surveyed a few GMs.

Ever wonder why his trade value may NOT be what some think? It's what I have said.......one clean year isn't enough for the baggage he had attached to him. At least not for serious capital and a long-term deal with serious guaranteed money. As mentioned before, run it back again and he can write his numbers.

*****Pats have been linked to AJ Brown since Vrabel's hiring. Word is that he and Brown are still close from their time with the Titans. He fought against Brown's trade to the Eagles. In other words, that way is more likely than Pickens to the Pats IMO.

BTW......guess this puts the Pickens for Crosby trade to rest (lol).
