You let him seek his value out by doing the franchise tag with the first round tender to where other teams can make offers that you can match or you can pass and accept the offers..

Lamb makes $39.9 million a year although with restructuring and moving things around he's only on the books AAV for 34, but you still have to pay the rest of his money in dead cap down the road in void years, or wherever it's gonna workout, you're going to pay the piper, a very high amount when you decide to move on from him...

You're way oversimplifying things and only looking at APY. Smith signed for less money but more guaranteed money and over a shorter extension.

• Smith 3 years, $75m ($25m APY) w/ $51m of that guaranteed
• Higgins 4 years, $115m ($28.75m APY) w/ $40m of that guaranteed

Smith is further down the rankings of top WR contracts, but probably got the more player friendly deal depending on how you look at it. Higgins came away with an extremely team sided contract that makes him disposable after the 2026 season if the Bengals wanted to trade him and try a new formula.

Plus Smith signed in 2024, Higgins in 2025 so the APY can really be explained off by the annual CAP inflation. Another year of inflation (I'll do 10% to keep the math simple) would put a projected deal based off of similar numbers to Smith/Higgins at

4 years/ 126.4m ($31.6 APY). That seems pretty reasonable and around what most of the chatter is, so really a lot of the talk right now is about paying Pickens Smith/Higgins type of money. The big question is going to be where the guarantees are at....Just my opinion but if he were willing to take a smaller guaranteed amount I wouldn't hesitate to pay him $34m per year like you are with Lamb.

He creates mismatches that are hard to account for. When you have to double-team him on the outside, that’s one fewer defender in the box, allowing the run game to open up.

I think the other team has to give him a long-term contract. The tag is not transferrable...it's just a one year option for the tagging team. Without the tag he has no contract. Can't play without a contract. He has to sign the tag before he can be traded iirc. No team is going to give up (2) first rounders AND pay him 35 mil/yr. It's just not happening. The Cowboys will be lucky to get ONE first rounder for him in a trade.
