I am starting to think GP3 is pricing himself out of Dallas market at $30mil plus. Im leaning towards a Tag and Trade with GP3. I would ask for a 1 and take a high 2 if it came down to it. Then use FA to get a cheaper WR2 such as, Romeo Doubs, Mike Evans or Alec Pierce. That being said, I think Mike Evans and Alec Pierce will be resigned by their current team. So the FA market could end up being slim Pickens...but if get a 1 for GP3 I am taking it all day everyday.
Yes, it’s a high price to pay, but I think it’s worth it. He forces defenses to double-team him, which immediately opens things up for the rest of the offense—CeeDee Lamb, Ferguson, and the run game all benefit. When your offense dictates how the defense has to line up and adjust, that’s a massive advantage. A lot of offensive coordinators around the league, especially when facing elite defenses, would love to have a weapon like that.
The idea that the Cowboys “can’t afford” this because of the cap is mostly a myth. Obviously they have to account for his salary, but the cap hit can be spread over multiple years to lower the annual impact. Dallas has actually been one of the more conservative teams when it comes to pushing money into future years, and this feels like the right moment to do it.
They can still build the defense without wrecking the cap. Spend money on two or three solid linebackers in free agency, then prioritize drafting corners and safeties. On top of that, moving on from some underperforming defenders could free up roughly $12–14 million right away.
The cap itself is also going up—from about $285 million to roughly $305 million. That increase alone makes fitting Pickens’ salary much more manageable.
Cowboys fans need to stop thinking like the front office, which seems allergic to signing top-end free agents. I’d rather they pay for Pickens than dump money into bargain-bin players who just eat up roster spots and cap space.
