The Fan on FA Sam Williams future as a Cowboy

I know he has been hurt, but it's been 4 years. At some point he needs to start consistently producing and not just occasionally flash. His rookie deal was for $6,322,499 so he hasn't cost much at least.
The measurables are what got us in this mess. He isn't a good football player, you can get ST guys in the UDFA pool every year.
the only gift the guy has is drawing penalties in the worst situations.

he is an idiot (sorry this is no offense, the guy is just plain stupid) and doesnt get it even after 4 years.

the guy is just an great athlete but a bad football player.
Do you remember how long the Arlington Jonesboys wasted on Rand Gregory and David Irving with off the field mess. Now you want to bash a guy that got hurt on the field, is young, talented, and fits DL in this defense better than the revolving door defense he played in with one and done DC.

Let him go and see how it works out. That is the Arlington Jonesboys way.

The problem Jerry has now is that he's very old and the older Cowboys fans, the ones that have been hanging around for 30+ years have finally started realizing there is no carrot.
The truth is many young fans have not necessarily stayed on the Cowboys bandwagon IMO.

The pervasive question they have for their parents and older Cowboys fans is what is the point?

The team is so inconsistent to even be reliable in fantasy football. They are rarely in the playoffs. What is the point?

If you are interested in attracting young women to your brand I can tell you that a wrinkly old man is not the most appealing look.

When some Cowboys fans say “Jerry wants to win”
I have seen this in many Cowboys fans who have tried to explain this organization in a postiive light, but the elephant in the room is the decades long futility.

I know that if I rained three decades of futility on these Cowboys fans in their personal lives they would crush under the onlsaught of defeat in their existence.

Why they tolerate this outcome for the team makes no sense to me. It costs them nothing to demand excellence, but it is like you are taking their first born if you insist that wrinkly old man change his ways.

Nowhere near the talent of either of those guys. It's a production based business and he has not been productive. The keys were handed to him after Micah's departure and he responded with 1 sack on the season. I have no idea why someone would want to die on the Sam Williams hill, but it certainly is a choice.

Been hearing how awesome he's going to be on here and utube etc for 3 years now. I Gave up on him a year and a half ago. Hes just another very common Dallas 2nd round bust. I have no issue letting him walk at all.

I think the younger generation today is more interested in what's popular today than what was popular years ago.

The Cowboys have always benefited from having a huge hater base to go with their fan base, so that drives up their viewership numbers.

The one thing nobody asks these days is .. what's the scale like now compared to 10 years ago .. meaning what's the balance of fans versus haters compared to 10, 20, etc. years ago.

Even worse for the Cowboys, I think a new group has grown significantly over the last 30 years .. the apathetic group.

I have said this many times over the years, but the misconception is that the Cowboys motivation that drives their salary cap strategies is not based on salary cap management or efficiency, but rather its part of an economic strategy focused on persistent annual revenue.

Now I know to most people when I say that all they hear is, "The Jones family only cares about making money" and in general, that is true of course.

However, when I say that I'm referring to their business model, more so than their desire become even wealthier.

Jerry is a businessman and in business, the goal is sustained revenue. In sports, the goal is to win.

The mistake Jerry has made for 30+ years is not being cheap or not trying to win, but rather operating within the framework and limits of his business model.

It's not that Jerry doesn't want to win, it's that he wants to win within a traditional business model and that simply does not mesh well with sports organizational models.

Sports organizations have to take risks to win championships and the Cowboys have not been willing to do that since Jerry fired Landry outside of an overpaid trade here and there.

As I have said many times, Jerry wants the Cowboys competing for a division title as long as possible every season. Their focus is on maintaining playoff chance for as close to 17 games as possible.

To the Jones family, the playoffs are a byproduct, not a strategic goal. They rate each season based on how many weeks they remain in playoff contention, not post-season success.

If the Cowboys remain in playoff content until the last week of the season or make the playoffs but lose in the first round, the Jones family considers that a solid business year.

Jerry will find a way to keep the Cowboys relevant during the playoffs so they get pseudo marketing/recognition while the best teams actually play football games.

The problem Jerry has now is that he's very old and the older Cowboys fans, the ones that have been hanging around for 30+ years have finally started realizing there is no carrot.
Nice post. Thanks.

Williams made the clutch play of the year on special teams. I know it’s not what we wanted but I would like to see him with the new coaching staff. If he’s cheap, sign him because we need several edges. I am not counting on Liafau doing anything.

James Houston 27 had 5.5 sacks last year . I like him in the 2026 rotation with hopefully Clowney
Yup, those are the two I want signed, Clowney and Houston. No Sam. I want a beast but I don’t know who else it would be, unless they sign Trey and he bounces back.

Pass.
Yes, lads, Yoda keeps players past their expiration dates. But Sam has had time and chances, and he won't be missed.

Have no problem if it is a reasonable deal.

This team has so many needs and only a few draft picks.

Hard to try to fix all of the needs by taking some more areas out.

Now if they manage to get a just as good or better option in FA...see ya.
If they manage to get a better Draft pick and sam is the lowest man on the totem pole...see ya.

I would just like to see what their real plan is, who they are targeting in FA or with their two 1st round picks.

Some areas this team might have to stick with certain players even though fans want them gone. Steele might be one of those players unless they think a current backup RT can take over. Because it would cost just as much if not a lot more to get a good one in FA and it seems they are going defense in the draft for the most part.

But as a 3-4 give me Fowler instead. I think Fowler is super underrated and can be a true weapon next to QW. Or on the opposite side next to Osa. I think the entire scheme change is gonna make a lot of our sub par talent seem ok. God i hate Eberusless

Clowney dosent play special teams and if we draft someone then hes just gonna be a progress stopper.
No. He's going to play, but he's not going to play every down. We need a rotation. Clowney is an early-down player. We need to bring in a pass rusher to pair with him. Whoever else we bring in can't play every down and right now, all we have is Eze and Houston, who likely will form a rotation as well. Check that, we also have Liufau as an OLB but is anyone expecting much there?

When I look at this from a business perspective the question I always raise is where is my future?

What is the retension rate of younger fans to the team in this Jones era as both he and Stephen and their core management staff get older and inconsistent?

If there is an existing pipeline of fans, the older generation, how much of what is driving them to stay with the Cowboys is resonating with the younger fans?

Is there a cohort of teenage and young adult fans who will make the core of the fanbase for the next two decades or is this franchise just riding on a customer base that was formed when we were in our early years and attach to the team due their consistent excellence and non-bi-polar behaviour?

I am referring to the Landry to Jimmy Johnson years. If it is the latter, then the fanbase may possibly be diminishing.

Anytime a player starts the preseason by telling us how great he is going to be this year.......he's not going to be great.

Tolbert told us before the 2023 season.

Mazi told us before the 2024 season.

Sam Williams told us before the 2025 season.

The Cowboys would be denying some young player an opportunity help improve this team if they resign Williams.

1050 career defensive snaps.....9.5 sacks......pathetic.

His agent should be too embarrassed to approach other teams.
