Archer: LB search continues

There’s no way he’s going to sign a deal for less than 20 that then has an out after two years. If the cash up front is low it’s going to be packed with guaranteed money. These agents are stupid
Yes, you pack it with guaranteed money. That's where the dead money hit comes in.

Teams frequently keep the early hits low and set up the later hits to where they can cut the player for less than what he's guaranteed.

For example, a four-year, $160 million deal could have $80 million guaranteed. (Not saying I'd pay him that, but your example was $40 million per year.)

If he received $20 million each of the first two years all guaranteed, that's $40 million of his guaranteed money. However, it also would leave $120 million ($40 million guaranteed) to pay out his last two years, when it may be cheaper to cut him and take the hit.

The agent and player don't care because he still made $80 million ($40 million APY) for two years of work. It's just how do you want to account for it?

I hear what you’re saying but then you cut him and have to eat the dead cap space. We’ve been in an insane world the past 4-5 with the cap, but it does go down in some cases. That’s a move you make when you think you’re 1-2 players away. Are we?

Poopy…I would have found another $15M per to sign him. Based on what other LBers got this was a steal.
Finding more money at this point becomes tricky. The only things left are the DTs all will be expensive risky.

Yes, you've always got to eat dead cap space when you go for it.

I don't believe in the 1-2 players away thing. Every year is a new year. Did anyone think the Seahawks were one or two players away last year?

I think you look at what's available and figure out the best way to go for it with what you can get. Unfortunately, for us, we don't have a front office that does that.

I'm happy that we're making a couple of moves with the trade for Gary and signing Thompson, but I believe it may turn out to be another case of us not doing enough to be a true contender.

I think Overshown is a starting ILB in this defense. That doesn't mean we won't sign an ILB and draft one, but I think it's more likely we'll draft one early if we get a place-holder like Okereke in free agency because we expect Overshown to start.

I mean, one of the comments that came out of the discussions with Parker is that the team was excited for the plans he has with Overshown. That led to speculation that they were going to move him to OLB before it was announced that Eze and Liufau would be OLBs but nothing was said about Overshown.

Dean and Walker both to the Raiders. LB starting to look thin.

I like Chenal....every time I see the Chiefs play it seems like he is making big plays. Quincy Williams and Devin Lloyd still out there. Kaden Elliss as well, who many liked over Dean.
I really like Chenal. Hope we land hi.

to not get an LB this offseason is an absolute failure. This position was arguably our worst.

They’re making it so they HAVE to draft a LB in the first. If they get CJ Allen that’s fine. But it’s one less pick on something else then.

Perhaps it's just me, but someone keeps feeding this Jane Slater this 'we were in it up to the very end' stuff over and over.

As if that should be a substitute for, you know, signing somebody.
Sounds like Little Enos.
