He is not a great player, but this is a great deal. I wrote in another thread that he may be back as a role player. At 3 million, he can be an experienced backup. He may fit what CP does better than as a 4-3 DE. He was one of the best special teams guys on the team. If he continues making big plays on special teams and serves as a backup or even emergency role player, that’s a good signing. I’m sure they are no longer hoping he turns into a starting edge rusher.

CJ Goldwyn as an over the hill guy who had 0 position value and did nothing but cover punts and kickoffs earned 1.77 million last year. Williams can play every special teams unit, not just coverage, and he blocks punts. So, if he provides emergency depth, with the increased salary cap and increased signings we see this year, 3 million is a good deal. Just stop hoping he will become a starting edge or sack the QB. Then you will see this as a very valuable signing.

theee coach @Ranching agrees to work with him and teach him better techniques to get to the QB. We will get Coog to act as an OT or sometimes maybe a blocking back. Coach has to make it happen.

Tackling dummy would be perfect for coogs. I think he would sacrifice himself for the team

Williams should be the disappointed one . After getting a ton of reps through his rookie contract all he could get second contract is a prove yourself 3 million deal . It’s a 17 game unending schedule you need the Sam Williams types to fill out a roster as depth .

I expect this position is not through in the talent search . Did Clowney sign with anyone yet . I suspect his agents asked for too much .

I can’t stand the dumbness that’s between the ears of Sam Williams. He is a penalty waiting to happen….but at this type of money, he is worth having around. Maybe when he realizes instead of signing for 20-30 per year, he will be out of the league unless he steps it up.

He will be fine as part of a rotation.

Shante Carver had 5 sacks his first 3 seasons. Sam Williams has 9.5….Sam Williams has started 5 games to Shante Carvers 26…..

Why has Sam Williams started less games? Because he can’t beat out the guys in front of him. He was a second round pick. Our FO would love to pencil him in as a starter if they could.
