CJ Goldwyn as an over the hill guy who had 0 position value and did nothing but cover punts and kickoffs earned 1.77 million last year. Williams can play every special teams unit, not just coverage, and he blocks punts. So, if he provides emergency depth, with the increased salary cap and increased signings we see this year, 3 million is a good deal. Just stop hoping he will become a starting edge or sack the QB. Then you will see this as a very valuable signing. He is not a great player, but this is a great deal. I wrote in another thread that he may be back as a role player. At 3 million, he can be an experienced backup. He may fit what CP does better than as a 4-3 DE. He was one of the best special teams guys on the team. If he continues making big plays on special teams and serves as a backup or even emergency role player, that’s a good signing. I’m sure they are no longer hoping he turns into a starting edge rusher.
