If he signs the tag he has basically called it quits on free agency and has to attend OTAs and just play out the season and huff both copium and hopium, dreaming that he might have a chance to be finally be a free next year.

He’s right though. No wide receiver named George Pickens playing for a Dallas area NFL team has ever been traded after being placed on a non-exclusive franchise tag in NFL history. Context matters- BOOM!

He has zero trade value at the moment as he apparently has not signed the franchise tag. If the Cowboys can’t come to terms with Pickens before the season starts a team might be willing to part with a 2027 3rd round pick for him before the trade deadline for the balance of the season. If he eventually leaves in free agency all Dallas is going to get is a 3rd round compensatory pick the following year.

Under the current circumstances a 3rd may be all that’s realistic.

Right now he is worth far more than a 3rd. And if he balls out again in 2026. That increases his value. Dallas will not let him go in FA to get a 3rd round comp pick. They will tag him again in 2027 before they allow him to be a FA.

Nope. Teams can't trade for him because then he has all of the contract leverage and the price for an extension goes way up. Players do not get traded in this context, ever.

Chandler Jones was traded like this in 2016

Step 1: Find out roughly what the team wants for the player

Step 2: talk to the player’s agent and negotiate an extension before the trade

Step 3: finalize trade parameters with the team that holds his rights.

The circumstances are the same. Every player I mentioned was off their rookie contract and franchise tagged while looking for an extension. Frank Clark went for a 1 and a 2. Chandler Jones went for a 2 and a starting OG. These would be great returns for Pickens, and whether or not anyone values him that high has nothing to do with “rules”
