Long term plan On Quinnen?

I was truly impressed at first with the trade. But to be honest, I did not see much difference with the defense last year. They got pounded in the second half of almost every game.
Did you look at the rest of the defense?

They probably made the right call. You don't give big future $ to a 28 yr old DT. Most DL aren't going to age as well as Cam Heyward has.

Don’t worry. The Cowboys brass always makes the right decision in these situations.

While I agree with your assessment, I don’t think we have all the details. If it is accurate that Q wanted an extension and the cowboys wanted a restructure, we don’t know how much Q wanted. Did the dumbos even ask? Or were they just stuck on not extending him now? I suspect that Q would rather wait for FA to cash in as well as the dumbos being dumb.
There are very few players toward the end of their second contract and at the 30 year mark that don’t want an extension.

Most restructures don’t even require the players approval because it’s built in to the contract already as an option. Dak and CeeDees were like this

Qs market value compared to us peers is only going to go down so I don’t think he’d have any desire at this point to not cash in on his last massive contract

Then why the hell did they trade a first and a second round pick for a two year rental?
No doubt they'll resign him if he stays healthy and continues at a high level. But he'll be 30 by the end of the 2027 season, you don't get in a hurry to give new guaranteed $ to a player like that.

Why? Because they're incompetent. They wanted the team to be competitive, relevant. Trading 2 high picks for a DT is the kind of move a team close to a SB makes. Buffalo or the Rams, perhaps. Not a 3-5 team that was all but certain to miss the playoffs. If Jordan Love or Dak get hurt, we have sacrificed an opportunity to land an elite WR, or perhaps our next QB.

Williams is a very good player. But we gave up 2 high picks for a guy who might only have 2-3 years of his prime left. That's just poor management.

Correct me if I am wrong on this, but I believe that Quinnen Williams was one of the few “bigger ticket” (larger) contracts that wasn’t restructured this offseason. In some sense that’s a bit surprising because you would think that he is a high level performer that’s young enough to stick around for a while.

He also wasn’t extended to a longer term deal which would have helped us out in keeping his contract number down going forward. Do you guys believe that the Cowboys are keeping their options open about trading him away at some point in the near future?

Will the Cowboys try to use Quinnen to amass picks to fill an upcoming need or for cap relief purposes? Let me know what your thoughts are on this situation.
Typically, the Cowboys give extensions to vets with 1 year left on their contract, not 2. If they want to lower his cap hit, they'll restructure him.

Maybe up until now they haven't had a reason to restructure him. They may also want to see how he plays at 29, then decide next year.

Either way, it's restructure this year, and or extension next year. But they have to have a reason, and maybe that's what they're waiting on.

I remember reading that the cowboys wanted a restructure and Q wants an extension. That seems to be the impasse. Hopefully they can get something done next year but I have my doubts.

They gave up too much to get Q. Williams here just to trade him away. They are merely keeping their options open as to when to do something with his contract.
You do not give up a 1st and a 2nd round pick, and not have a plan for him to stay here.

Heck NO! you don’t trade him, best DL player on team. We need to be able to stop the run. Our ex teammate almost ran for 200 yards against us last season. The Denver RB went 60 plus yards and no one laid a finger on him (he would have scored playing tag or flag football). Since the rams PO game this top brass has ignored the DT position and now they see how important the position is. SB winning teams build in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

No

Make him the highest paid DT then

Unfortunately for Q, he doesn't have a say either way. The Cowboys can restructure his contract any time they want. Your guess is as good as mine as to why they haven't yet. My guess is that they haven't had a reason to do it yet.

I'm sure every player wants an extension right now. But Q isn't getting one with 2 years left on his contract. Very few players do unless they are on rookie deals. Q is going to have to (God forbid) prove he is worth an extension this upcoming season.
