Have you met current or former Cowboys? Good experiences? Bad?

I met a bunch back around '07/'08 because I worked in the lube center at a car wash in Coppell, which was down the road from Valley Ranch. DeMarcus Ware, Andre Gurode, Anthony Spencer, Miles Austin... I met them all once. Of those, Ware and Andre were the most sociable and cool. Spence and Miles were more quiet but kind, and I got autographs from both.

The more regulars were Patrick Crayton (*edit: I don't like to talk bad about anyone so I won't), Nate Jones and Keith Davis. Nate and Keith were super sociable and super cool — definitely my favorites.

I was at a field day event for my elementary school and although he didn’t have a kid at our school he was there. He was really gracious and genuine. I asked him about Doug Dennison who, for some reason, was one of my favorite cowboys at the time and he said he was a great guy. He asked me questions about my events that day and cheered me I competed in the Potato Sack race. At least he was clapping and waved so I thought it was all for me so I tried extra hard!

He became my favorite cowboy that day and has always been a near and dear part of my fandom.

I've met a few Cowboys' players in my life. The one who was the friendliest was Eugene Lockhart. My daughter and I met him at a signing at Texas Stadium, along with his teenage son. The next day he was at our Tail Gate party before the game. Eugene remembered us from the day before, and he gets on his phone and makes a call....he then hands the phone to my daughter, and says, "here, talk to my son". LOL She talked to him for a long time, and Eugene was just mingling around and talking to everyone...happy as a clam!!
Then, about a year or two later, I believe he was arrested for some kind of fraud. But, at least he was nice to us! LOL
 
I met and shook Charles Haley's hand in the gym (Ronnie Lotts Club Fitness , San Jose CA 1993 early 90;s). He was a mean/intimidating looking dude, but very polite and soft spoken.

I high five-ed Jimmy Johnson, Billy Bates, Emit, Michael, Moose, other players & coaches..etc... at Candlestick park while they were leaving the locker after the Championship game victory (January 17, 1993) to board the bus. Tried to congratulate and high five Nate but he ignored me. Aikman walked right past with head down - did not like the attention.

I met Barry Swtizer at the Omni hotel (November 1997 ) while he was there doing a radio show. I shook his hand and we chatted for several minutes. He was the Most down to earth charismatic "high profile" person I have ever met! He was Extremely amiable and witty. He really made a great impression on me. Not only did he answer my questions, but he also asked me some, which made me feel like he was genuinely interested.
 
I went to the big Cowboys/Packers game at the old Stadium in 2007 with a few buddies. The day before the game I met Sam Hurd, Andre Gurode and signing autographs, Preston Pearson. I had a great experience with all 3. Really fun, cool guys. We had a Nerf football and I had Gurode long snap one to me. He air mailed it 5 feet over my head. We were dying with laughter. Big Andre was really cool about it. Good times
 
These guys are just humans like we are. Once after a big game at Texas Stadium…I cannot recall which but it was regular season….for some reason my friend and I ended up way out in the middle of nowhere at some strip mall, and just went into an Italian joint for some quick food, then in walks Nate Newton and his entire very large family. All great people, but I mean….the guy I was watching from the upper level, wearing 61 and kicking butt, was just somehow not the same thing. THAT guy was a hero. The guy standing next to me? Just another person same as me.

I worked in sports media for a little while and I guess I just developed a sense of not being starstruck or whatever. Autographs are as dumb as can be unless it’s on the bottom right of a check. Ha.

I will admit that I was a bit intimidated by Charles Haley though. I love that guy just behind Prime as my all timers, and maybe that was part of it…but he gave me an odd, creepy sort of feeling in person. Almost thought he might bite me or something, and I’m not even trying to be funny. Strange dude and it’s not a secret. Don’t care. Number 94 was what put those teams over the top.

The NFC Championship where Troy was knocked out of the game and they brought in Bernie Kosar, Harper told me Kosar pulled him aside and stressed the DB was about to jump that slant. He said Kosar told him to expect it on the back shoulder.

If you watch the replay, it's third and four and you'll see that is the play Harper caught it and ran for a TD.

That's good to know. Because to the casual observer it looked like the only reason it wasn't picked off was because it was a bad pass. I feel better believing it was intentional.
 
I met WR Robert Steele.

Who is he?

Robert Steele was Drew Pearson's backup in 1977 after they traded Golden Richards when Tony Hill beat him out for the starting position.

He never played a down, he got very few reps in practice. That's because Drew Pearson always insisted on taking every rep he possibly could. Drew never came out of the game.

Mr. Steele told me that Drew always took a tape measure to practice with him. He was always exactly where he was supposed to be. He told me that Drew Pearson made his cuts like a surgeon.

I used to have some of them come down and hold camps at my HS. 3 years....had them over to my home for a BBQ one year. Randy White, George Teague, Everson Walls, Larry Brown, Eric Williams, Solomon Page and several none Cowboys....all great experiences. Randy and I had some great private conversations in my office. Can't really say much about them, he didn't speak well about some of the studs....met Irvin in San Antonio. He was cool to my staff, talked to Jerry for about half hour at a camp, sat at a table with 4 coaches In San Angelo for about 2 hours, drank beer and talked football with Wade, Tuberville, Mack Brown and Nick Saban. Talked one on one about offensive play with Garrett, he sucks!!!! Several more, but that's all the Cowboys I can remember. Oh wait, met Drew Pearson and John Dutton at a basketball game, then drank a pitcher of beer with Dutton on South Padre Island about 10 years later

Almost duplicates my list as well. I lived in the apartment complex just across the road (the old Forest Lane practice facility) and frequently saw the guys leaving almost every day while in season. Even shared a quick lunch with Randy White at that McDonald's. We pretty much only talked about bass fishing, lol. Unfortunately, I could never catch up with Tom Landry.

Funny part about this - there was never a crowd of fans or reporters at the practice place. You might have seen 3 or 4 people, at most, hanging around the parking lot. The players were just not harrassed at all, and never seemed to mind to take a minute or two to chat. And stupid me - I never got a photo or autograph, that was never on my mind. Maybe because I was just 19-20 years old and didn't realize how lucky I was to be in that situation.

Funny sidenote:
A few years earlier, while still in High School, our football coach was a good friend of Don Coryell. We went up to a St. Louis Cardinals football practice and I got to meet Terry Metcalf, Dan Dierdorf and Conrad Dobler. Dobler and Dierdorf were constantly jostling with each other. I guess Dobler was a good wrestler, he was always rolling around on the ground wrestling with the other linemen. This was of particular interest to me, as I was a wrestler as well. I think Coryell spent more time separating Dobler from the other guys than he did anything else, lol.
 
I did a coaches clinic in the early 2000’s that the Cowboys put on. There were lots of players there that we hung around with for the entire day. Jerry spoke for about 15 mins. The two guys I spoke to the most were Deion, and get this Charles Hailey. Hailey wasn’t even part of the clinic but he hung out for a couple hours and BSd a lot? I also talked to Deion another time when he was promoting his “Must be the Money” album. I had a recording studio that was working with the local radio station hosting the event. He was super cool that day as well.
 
I have met Romo, Too Tall and Bill Bates.

Romo was at the Pro/Am golf tournament at Pebble Beach. He signed my son’s Romo jersey. Got a few pictures with him. He finished his round and got mobbed. All these memorabilia people wanted him to sign all kinda of stuff. Started crowding him and I got to push some guys out of the way to get him out of there. It was kinda awesome.

Too Tall was at a trade show and I was able to take a picture with him and we talked for a few minutes. The hugest hands I have ever shaken. Super nice guy. Gentle Giant is the best way to describe my perception of him.

Bill Bates was at training camp when I was in high school. Back then I was able to walk up to the players. QB was Gary Hogaboom and Billy Cannon Jr was the first rounder that year. I got a few autographs, but Bill Bates was the guy I actually talked to for a few minutes. He was extremely nice, and you couldn’t knock the smile off my face if you would have hit my with a brick.

Randy White walked by me after a game in Dallas once when I had waited about 45 minutes in the taxi line. I was next in line for the cab and had my seven year old with me. Had to make a business decision and get in the cab.
 
When Emmitt Smith had his radio show at Fatso's in Arlington back when the triplets were still playing. I met tons of players that would come and be on his show and resulted in tons of autographs.

Everyone was generally nice, but the only one I remember being somewhat of an ****** was Tony Casillas. It wasn't that he mean or anything. He just walked around like everyone was beneath him when I met him. I didn't so much hold it against him, he was winning super bowls about that time. It was just off-putting.
 
Ebenezer Ekuban bought a piano from me, very nice guy. Jay Ratliff rented a violin for one of his kids or his girlfriends kids they were super nice, bigger in person than I expected. Marc columbo rented a sax for his daughter before he left for NY, huge dude.

Side note I forget the name but the saints kicker when they won the SB let me wear his ring for a second. Nice kid.
