Cowboys Headlines: UDFA impresses; Trigg closing in on roster spot?

Math was never my strong suit, but the way I figure it.
Trigg-onometry subtracts Schoonmaker from the 53. ;)
I think his salary this year is guaranteed, and they rarely get rid of guys they have to pay anyway.
Isnt this year 4 of his rookie deal?
Maybe they could trade him?

No, he's been cutable since last year. $389K dead money. $1.6m cap savings.

They didn’t give the man a three year contract and $3m to sit on the practice squad. It would honestly be more of a surprise if he doesn’t make it

All the udfa's get a similar contract. He did get $280K guaranteed which basically guaranteed a practice squad spot. But I do think he has the talent to make the team.

Yeah, that $280k was a lot more than the other udfas. It was more than most 7th round picks and close out what 6th round picks get although those guys get a fourth year.

Considering the number of 3 TE sets Schottenheimer likes to run I'm guessing they keep 4.
Considering Trigg is not exactly known a a blocker it would be someone else playing that role to push Schoonmaker off the roster.
Also need to consider there was another UDFA with the same skillset as Trigg along with Fant whose staying around so they could always just play there odds and figure they can start 2 of the 3 on the practice squad if they only keep 3!
Regardless considering the difference in skillsets I'm thinking Trigg in playing to force them to keep an extra TE, not necessarily competing Schoonmaker!

A lot of excellent content and fully explains the title.

It's a shame you missed out.
I generally try to avoid what looks like clickbait since I don't want to contribute to that. You say it's not clickbait; others don't seem to think so, but maybe they didn't read it either. I still won't click on it because of the title, just like I don't click on all the talking heads that just try to run up their numbers.

I’ll be rooting pretty hard for Rico2, but it should be understood that he is no Caleb. Speaking of Caleb, I suppose he could fill the TE3 role as well if need be.

This will be more doable if he doesn’t need to play much left tackle. The fellas are gonna need to help him here and there.

So sure, I wouldn’t hate an instant dynamic TE out of nowhere that the rest of the league missed several times over. Endless puns for the fall season. Sounds fine to me.

Could be a total steal if he'd get it in his head that he has to block at a high level. Weak TE class, surprised he wasn't drafted. I think he had some issues, got benched at Oxford and disciplined(whatever that means) at Ole Miss.

ONLY if he's suddenly decided to grow up.

Really rooting for Trigg to make the 53. He would add a lot to the offense.

Cowboys Headlines: UDFA impresses; Trigg closing in on roster spot?
Cowboys Wire
July 15, 2026

The Dallas Cowboys have a strong track record of finding undrafted free agents who not only make the roster but also find ways to contribute early.

On offense, Michael Trigg may have the best shot of any UDFA to make the Cowboys' final 53-man roster. Trigg brings something different to the tight end room with his ability to stretch the field vertically.

Look it's nice to have hope for some of these guys and that's great lot of upside but to say he's closing in on a roster spot why do these guys always do that and yes the resource you cited is one of those that mostly are all rumors and rhetoric and hyperbole It's always shock value they're way over the top... Not the worst but they are bad at it you can't close in on a roster spot until you've gone through camp and preseason we need to see the full picture not the pajama party that they just went through..

Being honest these things are ridiculous I know it's the offseason and the doldrums of the offseason are settling in but he's not closing in on a roster spot until he proves it.. That will be a full training camp and a full preseason play card we need to see it all then we'll talk about it.. Goes for 60% of the team that's gonna be fighting for either a roster spot or how they land on the depth chart 40% is probably set but the rest of them it will be fun to watch but I don't like the headlines and the assumptions going on this early..

It’s been a full month since minicamp, and the players are on their mandatory six week break before training camp

How is Trigg “closing in on a roster spot?”

This is just a make work engagement piece for the writer. They could have posted any other stale, month old message board type opinion and likely will tomorrow.

Can’t wait for the next “Headline”
