Did Jerry or the coaches pick the new assistant coaches?

What's really funny is that you say that the coaches didn't pick their assistants and say that Jerry did when there is no way he knew who these young coaches were.

I think fans want to believe it is different. They want to say No-Schott purged the Jerry taint on offense last year but then blame Jerry for the defensive hire. I think No-Schott deserves some of the blame because he was probably too focused on building his offensive staff to take on the task on the defensive side, so he deferred to the GM.

I kind of see it like Kellen Moore under McCarthy. Most Cowboys fans probably believe Moore was forced on McCarthy, but I believe McCarthy saw that we had one of the top offenses under and thought he could build on that instead of tearing down and starting over. Would he have chosen Moore without the Joneses' influence? Probably not. But I see no indication that he had a problem with retaining Moore.

Now, I do believe we are best off when the Joneses stay out of coaching decisions. I just don't see evidence of Jerry telling his head coaches, here's who I want so deal with it. I believe the evidence shows it s a collaborative effort. I think it's likely that No-Schott told Jerry after Eberflus what kind of process he'd like to go through to find the next defensive staff and Jerry agreed. But I don't think that's any different than how he's worked with previous coaches.
I think it’s more different than you might think. Only Garrett, Parcells and Jimmy had any control of their staffs

Garrett had some surprising freedom in the defensive side. Jerry loved him like a son but Garret is also the most famously limp butt-kissing sycophant in team history except maybe Campo

McCarthy
Nolan: McCarthy hire 100%
Quinn: Jerry 100%
Zimmer: Jerry 100%
Eberflus: Jerry 100% (even before HC)

Phillips
Garrett: Jerry 100% (hired before Wade) - Jerry even laid Garrett as OC more than Wade as HC)
Stewart: Jerry 100% even though Wade was a defensive coach
Sparano: 100% Jerry. He was “assistant head coach” and mandated by Jerry. He didn’t even report to Wade (that’s for real)
Haley: 100% Jerry. Wade didn’t even interview him
John Garrett: 100% Jerry
Sherman: 100% Jerry
Wes Phillips: Wades son and his only hire

Parcells
Bill actually got to pick his staff

Campo and Gailey
absolutely zero hires on the staff. Jerry had absolute control of every coach

Show me the evidence of that lapdog? One of his many yes me brings this stuff to his attention.

Yeah, you haven’t really thought this through and are just repeating the same stuff as twitter hashtags.

Be interested in something that wasn’t such low effort but yeah, ok

I love how these guys think things are obviously different now ........ but use examples where he has pretended to change before.

100% Jerry hire

These last two off season are very different though. Jerry’s fingerprints aren’t on either side of the roster now that Schottenheimer and Parker purged the defense.

Schottenheimer purged the offense of Jerry taint last year
:lmao:

See, I’ve been a fan as long as you but I didn’t stop paying attention when you did.

For some reason, it feels less Jerry this time.
When you forced a defensive coordinator on a head who turns to be the worst in team history.....
You literally have no choice but to try a different approach......and we are seeing that. Just my take but here he way I think happened.....

***Schotty and Stephen convinced Jerry to try a different appraoch. Let Schotty find and hired his own DC
***Schotty ( Stephen and maybe McClay) convinced Jerry to allow him and his new DC to hire their own assistant coaches

Just speculation on my part but it would NOT surprise me if Schotty first convinced Stephen and McClay and all three approached and convinced Jerry.

Parcells said that he had no objections to the player being brought here. That's different than not wanting. If he had objected, I don't think Jerry would have signed him. He was indifferent to Owens, which gave Jerry the hole he needed.

I do absolutely agree with you on Sorenson.
the way BP kept calling him The Player says it all

Show me evidence that Jerry Jones knows all the young coaches around the league.

Don't see why Quinn was a Jerry hire. McCarthy first hired Nolan, who was a buddy and had given him a job as a coach. So McCarthy was able to bring in Nolan, but Jerry brought in Quinn? Don't know if there's evidence to support that. Not sure on Zimmer, either. I don't know if McCarthy had anyone in mind after Quinn left. The ties with Jerry are certainly there, but that doesn't mean there wasn't discussion and McCarthy didn't say sure because Zimmer had been a top coordinator.

Eberflus seems to have been a Jerry hire because of the timing, but we're not behind the scenes. He could have asked the candidates he was considering for the head coaching job about it before making the move.

Again, McCarthy brought in several coaches he had worked with before. We give him credit/blame for hiring Nolan but then give Jerry credit/blame for Quinn and Zimmer. I think it was more of a cooperative process.

The one you didn't mention under McCarthy was Kellen Moore. I do think that was Jerry's suggestion, but I also believe McCarthy in that he wanted to keep a successful offense mostly intact and essentially add his stuff to it over time.

That's all I've got time for now, but what I see is a lot of conjecture without much proof.

I do agree that before Parcells that Jerry was much more heavy-handed about picking coaches. I think he became more of an it-takes-a-village guy after Parcells even though he was still the village idiot.

Yea ........ this silly thread wants us to forget about 30 years of "my way or the highway" narcissism, pretending it has changed.

Jerry also hired Parcells and McCarthy ....... he has hired good coaches before ....... he just never lets them gain to much power because he does not want a repeat of Jimmy.

This time he hired a puppet head coach and then a young coach from a rival and certain fans are convinced its an all new Jerry.

Pitiful
Z, I know you can be sensible. Putting aside the last 30 years and just going back to the Micah trade, Jerry has most definitely seemed to have taken a step back. See that I said the Micah trade and that doesn’t include Schotty‘s hiring. Schotty has had a much greater influence on personnel. Stephen has taken a much greater role in the war room and might not be the worst thing if Stephen defers more to his staff than Jerry did. My biggest concern is going forward. If this is temporary and goes right back to his old ways, which is very possible. Let’s hope it’s permanent and not an illusion. Schotty may not be the answer, but he seems to have us pointing in a better direction. I’ll take it all back if Jerry meddles again.

If an "extensive search" wasn't given to aquire the HC, what does that say about the HC's "extensive search" for assistant coaches?

Merely a question
To me it says that the HC has had more input/influence than the previous HCs. At least I hope.

How much influence do you think the lame duck McCarthy actually had?

If you don’t see, it’s because you don’t want to.

Eberflus seems to have been a Jerry hire because of the timing, but we're not behind the scenes. He could have asked the candidates he was considering for the head coaching job about it before making the move.
Timing, familiarity, new head coach who was just shocked and happy he even got the job. Schotty would have agreed to anything. And he did.

Again, if you can’t figure out that Eberflus was a Jones hire that Schotty went along with, it’s only because you don’t want to.

Again, McCarthy brought in several coaches he had worked with before. We give him credit/blame for hiring Nolan but then give Jerry credit/blame for Quinn and Zimmer. I think it was more of a cooperative process.

There’s plenty of proof for those open to seeing it.

going back to the Micah trade
But see ......I think that was typical Jerry ...... He got his feelings hurt and got mad without caring how it affected the team.

I do not think it was about the money at all ...... it was about Micah not doing things the way Jerry wanted.

Now that is my opinion ..... and I hope I am wrong and you are right.

I don’t disagree with you. I mentioned the Micah trade not because it was a good situation. But it seems to be the catalyst to the change we’re hopefully seeing.

The coaching staff hires were ultimately Schottenheimer's decisions, with input from the Cowboys' front office (Jerry and Stephen). Schottenheimer said he would "cast a wide net" for candidates and led the interview process before making recommendations that the organization approved.

The Cowboys hired Christian Parker as defensive coordinator after Schottenheimer interviewed multiple candidates. Parker was Schottenheimer's choice following an extensive search. After Parker was hired, Schottenheimer and Parker worked together to assemble the defensive coaching staff. Parker had significant input into selecting assistants who fit his defensive system, while Schottenheimer had final authority as head coach.

This is how it should be.
