I think fans want to believe it is different. They want to say No-Schott purged the Jerry taint on offense last year but then blame Jerry for the defensive hire. I think No-Schott deserves some of the blame because he was probably too focused on building his offensive staff to take on the task on the defensive side, so he deferred to the GM.
I kind of see it like Kellen Moore under McCarthy. Most Cowboys fans probably believe Moore was forced on McCarthy, but I believe McCarthy saw that we had one of the top offenses under and thought he could build on that instead of tearing down and starting over. Would he have chosen Moore without the Joneses' influence? Probably not. But I see no indication that he had a problem with retaining Moore.
Now, I do believe we are best off when the Joneses stay out of coaching decisions. I just don't see evidence of Jerry telling his head coaches, here's who I want so deal with it. I believe the evidence shows it s a collaborative effort. I think it's likely that No-Schott told Jerry after Eberflus what kind of process he'd like to go through to find the next defensive staff and Jerry agreed. But I don't think that's any different than how he's worked with previous coaches.
