Cowboys won't play starters in the preseason!

How do teams do that lose their starters in preseason? How did we do when we lost Romo?
You could lose a starter in a practice. Or one of those joint practices.

No one is advocating they play the entire preseason but a couple of series, maybe a quarter would make sense especially on defense with new personnel and a new DC shifting to a 3-4.

We'll see. I can guarantee Harbaugh is taking the giants' run game seriously as a head coach and he's gotta know that we don't (or haven't). We will be tested.
Yeah and let's see if he plays his starters in the pre season.

Are you serious? We losing old man Romo during preseason was a blessing. Rookie Dak helped lead the team to a 13-3 record, won a franchise record 11 games straight during the same regular season, were able to secure the #1 NFC playoff seed, plus host an NFC Divisional Playoff game.
However, it pretty much ended Tony's career.

I'll go with playing it safe and let guys battle for a roster spot.

They changed a lot of things.
The last 30 years "they changed a lot of things" yet the more things stay the same. There is absolutely no disputing that. In fact, Jerry went back into "I know more than everyone else" and hired Jason Garrett 2.0 as his HC.

You know who the starters are . Time for Nathan Thomas Alijah Clark Joe Milton Sam Howell Phil Mafah all those receivers like Anthony Smith Denzel Mims to show up and make this club . Michael Trigg etc.

Sad but true. I never wanted to see Tony end his career that way. He was a warrior for us, gambler and all. He deserved a better ending. Just like his recent OWI incident in Wisconsin to where CBS has now suspended Tony. To me that is a bunch of bunk and uncalled for, especially since this was his very first incident ever. CBS should be more loyal and appreciative. First time offense? Talk to him and give him a break. No need to jump the gun and suspend him.

Things are definitely not the same this year and we have some exciting new talent.

I'm of the school of thought the starters should play a quarter or two in the preseason mostly to knock off some rust and mentally prepare for game 1. However, beyond game 1 I don't think it really matters for the veteran players getting preseason reps so not a huge deal. A team won't miss the playoffs just because they didn't play their starters all preseason.

Rookies on the hand, the additional reps do matter and believe they should play a fair amount.

a quarter or so for the vets but say two games for the rookies.

I think playing starters is an outdated idea from a bygone era.
  1. Blame Sean McVay. He started it in 2018 and loads of teams have followed. I know the Eagles and Panthers do it. Lions, Chargers and a bunch more either sit them completely or give them a series in a game
  2. Preseason over the last decade has become more and more an exercise in churning the bottom half of the roster and establishing key depth for the regular season
  3. Ever since the league went to a 17 game season coaches have begun resting players more and more to avoid injury and late season burnout. Week one is a preseason game ever since they went to the 17game season and refduced the number of pre-season games if you want to look at it that way .
  4. Joint practices have replaced preseason games for many teams when it corks to testing players against other teams. It’s more controlled and focused and doesn’t consume an extra two-three days of a practice week with travel and game day extras
  5. If Dak or Downs or CeeDee were to tear an Achilles in preseason people would howl for blood and demand the head coach be fired.

They play too many games as it is.

Cue the week one devastating injury.
Cue the preseason season ending and franchise altering injury

Injuries can happen anytime. The only way to avoid them is to minimize the risks especially in games that don’t impact the win-loss record.

Like Sam Bradford. It cost the Rams three seasons while they looked for a QB.

And I’m sure we all remember this pre-season classic. YouTube blocks direct links but …

Oh, and Darryl Stingley was a preseason game
