Williams has 3 career blocked punts and can even function as the gunner.
He's the sp team's replacement for Goodwin but can also provide snaps as OLB!

Marquise Bell is their STs guy according to Schotty.

I think we expected him to develop into more of a starter caliber player considering he was a higher pick in the draft…..he’s been very very mid, if that.

Sam Williams is actually performing very well, whether blitzing from the edge, stopping the run or pass protecting. He's been performing very well all training camp and preseason. Definitely, a keeper.

I don’t think it was DC and scheme changes, he just didn’t develop his personal pass rush ability and his traits just aren’t enough to win reps regularly. He’s just super average and didn’t develop anything to make himself stand out (regardless of scheme).

Go watch the review tapes from Schotty and Parker. They both are very happy with Sam Williams this summer.

Hmmm ... going back to last winter multiple people have brought up Bell being the perfect fit as the hybrid Will/Safety prominent in the defense Parker is expected to run.
I don't ever remember Bell standing out as a special teams player or ever blocking a punt... much less 3!
His strength is as a coverage LB!

A plethora of 2nd round picks in that span.

Marshawn Kneeland and Sam Williams were 2nd rounders.
Eze was a 2nd rounder(only played one year under Eberflus so unfair to say his uneven rookie year was on Eberflus).
Liufau was a 3rd rounder.
Overshown a 3rd rounder
Carson was a 5th rounder

Then you had guys like Juanyeh Thomas and Marquis Bell who looked formidable under Quinn but Eberflus and Zimmer determined they couldn't play.

Nevermind all the crap players we brought in like Elam, Murray, and whoever else we brought in who I guess Eberflus sold as his guys.

Whether you think these guys suck is debatable. The fact is they got worse under Zimmer and Eberflus and that is not a good hire.

I don't think Land is competing against Houston. I think Houston is on the roster as a pass rusher.

Williams is the only one in jeopardy of not making the roster IMO because he doesn't provide much as a pass rusher. But I agree that because of special teams, he is likely to make the team over Land and Wheat, who has also played special teams with some success at it.
