TRADED Cowboys trade for OT Broderick Jones

Run down on Broderick Jones for Dallas people:

- Steelers have played / started him at RT and LT over his career, 38 starts. Better at LT than RT for sure.

- Has looked rough this preseason. Played both sides. Coming off neck surgery and still trying to get back to ideal playing weight

- Jolly guy. He is a great locker room vibes guy who is always happy around the facility. Loved by teammates.

- Athletic player. Has some bad habits (waist-bending, crossing feet, wide hands, etc.) that get him into trouble. Good demeanor in the run game.

- Was at best the swing tackle for the Steelers.

Lets also not forget he was the 14th overall pick in the 2023 draft. He was slotted there for a reason.

Draft bio

Overview

Ultra-athletic tackle prospect with the size, length and potential to develop into a plus starter on the left side. Jones’ frame and technique both are in the developmental phase. His entry into block fits can be a little disjointed. He needs to improve his punch accuracy and timing to make the most of his length in pass protection. Jones is very talented at working into space and landing a block to help spring the running game. He has the nimble feet to mirror or recover against the rush. Jones isn’t a finished product, but the physical and athletic gifts allow for a projection as a good, long-time starter.

Edit: I'm guessing his weakness was more on display than his strengths due to the injury

  • Less than two full seasons of starting experience at left tackle.
  • Needs to keep his chin tucked and back flat in protection.
  • Punch comes from outside angles and is slow to stick the rusher.
  • Gives early ground when challenged by power rush.
  • Doesn’t fit up run blocks in one, fluid motion.
  • Will need to improve play strength as a pro.
  • Tends to duck head and lose sight into first contact.

You'd have to blindfold Broderick Jones and turn him around backwards to make him the Murray of OTs.

Is Jones elite? No. But he's not trash. Just doing some research on the guy helps instead of just screaming "he sucks" just for the sake of saying it.
I'll say it: he's trash

You aren't getting a starter. Every team has offensive line problems right now outside of 3-4 teams.

What is the overpay? They swapped a 3rd for a 4th, and Pittsburgh will likely finish middle is the pack. That's about like trading 20 spots back.

Don't care about 6th round picks.
A top 100 pick for a guy that sucks just is less than ideal imo

He actually grades out higher as a RT. Not that that is everything

Im guessing Steele is getting benched
Doubtful. Hes likely the swing tackle.

Hes coming off a neck injury and has struggled to hit playing eight. If anything hes a a move for future on Steele. Only 25 years old let Oriley and Klayton get hands on him. Last year of his contract too.

Not a move that has me running the streets naked, but we need a capable swing tackle. And as someone else else said they aren't just a lot of these guys on streets.

Looking at the traditional value chart this ends up being a 5th and 6th round pick for Jones. Granted the Steelers mismanaged him so maybe he can improve with a change of scenery but that is a pretty steep price for a player that was going to be cut. My guess is he will be the swing tackle with the potential to replace Steele once he recovers from his surgery and if he performs better than him, which would be the best outcome.

so many in here saying I hope we go and get a tackle. We go and get a tackle... same people... this guy sucks. I didnt want this tackle. I wanted an all pro tackle on a rookie deal for a 5th rd pick. Our front office sucks!

Cowboys received:- George Pickens- Broderick Jones- 2027 4th
Steelers received:- 2026 3rd- 2027 3rd- 2027 5th. The Steelers, as noted, also sent and then got back their own 2027 6th, fwiw.

Ochoa got the assignment from The Star

Make this trade look good by making it sound like it’s part of the Pickens trade.

Hopefully, Klayton Adams isn’t the one who wanted Shelton.
The jury is still out on him. He sits on ps this year spends an offseason getting stronger, then we'll have a better grip on him. NFL has a development problem, and fans have a patience problem.

One example of it working. And they still haven't signed him. Even when it works we find a way to muck it up.

All the others were traded for simply because Jerry remembered their names.

It's a risk, and not a smart one, and will most likely fail. Fair to expect that, considering their history doing the exact same thing and getting the exact same results.
