Predicting The Inactives

With 8 OLineman, the gameday roster is 48. 53-48=5

With 7 OLineman, the roster is 47. 53-47=6

I am not including the potential two call ups from practice squad or the emergency QB.
Based on what I just read, it's 46 if you go with 7 OL and 48 if you go with 8. Apparently, they wanted to provide teams with an incentive to go with 8.

The two call-ups count against the 46- or 48-man limits. In other words, if you call two players up, you have to make two on the 53 inactive.

I am almost positive that source is wrong. Less than 8 offensive linemen and it is 47.

How many inactive players are allowed in the NFL?

NFL teams are allowed to have 48 active players on game day from a 53-man roster, meaning five players must be listed as inactive. If a team doesn't have at least eight active offensive linemen, the active roster drops to 47 players, increasing the number of inactives to six.

OK. I did a lot of searching because there are many mixed signals concerning this out there and I wanted an official source. I finally found something on nfl.com (updated through 2026) that would indicate that you are correct: It's 47, but goes to 48 with an eighth lineman.

ROSTER SIZES

Active ("Gameday") List: If a team has a minimum of eight offensive linemen (primary position being center, guard or offensive tackle) on the active game day roster, the maximum roster size is 48 players. If a team has fewer than eight offensive linemen, the maximum drops to 47 players.

Active/inactive ("53-Man") List: The active/inactive list remains at 53 players for the regular season and playoffs. However, a team can increase its roster to 54 or 55 players only by using the standard elevation addendum (explained below) to bring one or two practice squad players to the active/inactive list.

Either of our scenarios don’t make any sense if ya think about it.

If it does drop to 47, why not bring up a free OLineman anyways?

If it drops to 46, who wouldn’t bring up an OLineman to get an extra player at a different position to get to 48?

The rule seems stupid unless I am missing something which I probably am :lmao:

The stuff I read is that it was done after the 49ers ran out of backup linemen in a game, so they wanted to give teams an extra spot specifically to induce them to bring an extra lineman to the games. They had already given teams a 47th active player during COVID. I thought they had taken away that 47th player and replaced it with the lineman incentive ... essentially if you take an extra lineman to games, we'll also give you another extra player you can take to games (to make 48). NFL.com indicates, though, that the 47th player rule isn't tied to the extra lineman rule, so teams get 47, then 48 if they carry an eighth lineman, then I guess 49 if they have an inactive emergency QB (but that player must be on the 53, so you can't call up a practice squad QB and make him the inactive emergency guy).

I think I've got that all straight now, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong because the whole thing is a bit convoluted.

It is convoluted. Why not just have one rule where active rosters set at 48 with at least 8 offensive linemen players? I can’t imagine a team go in with 47 and say, naw, were good without the extra player

Pretty sure wheat will be active for special teams.
If Wheat is in, who are you going to sit?

If the eighth OL essentially doesn't count, then we have nine, so you can only sit one of those (Shelton).

Can't really afford to sit a RB and have just two or a tight end and have just two, even though Luepke can serve as the third for both those spots.

If Camden Brown is one of our inactives, I can't see us making another receiver inactive.

Sitting Wheat would leave us with five ends/OLBs, which is a good number to have.

Most likely Overton sits at DL, unless Bullard needs some healing time, but I don't think we take fewer than four to games.

Same with ILB, we have four on the roster.

Carson or Speed will likely be inactive at CB. So it comes down to whether you'd rather have Alijah Clark or Wheat for ST.

It appears you are correct. If you carry an eight OL on the game-day roster, you get an extra spot in addition to the OL. So it's 46 without an eighth OL, 48 if you carry an eighth OL and 49 if you carry a third QB who is on the 53 as the emergency QB.

I had never realized that you got an extra spot in addition to the OL if you carried an eighth, but I just read it.
The reason they started that rule is because teams were getting themselves in trouble trying to go into games with only six or seven offensive linemen

Yeah, I think it was mentioned that San Fran ran out of linemen to

I know it's not exactly how it's written, but, functionally speaking, this is basically the rule, just as you wrote it. And that's how teams view it, 48 as long as there's 8+ lineman.

I believe the Steelers screwed this up in like week 1 or week 2 right after the rule was implemented and only took 47 guys to game day, and I think a couple other teams had some confusion as well early in that season. But, since then, I think there has only been a couple instances where a team had less than 48 players active, and they were all because the teams physically did not have enough healthy bodies to make 48.

I'm sure this will never happen because it's too risky from an injury perspective, but the only way to game the system now is to make only 6 offensive lineman active, leaving you with 41 spots for non-lineman (one more than 48 players/8 lineman or 47 players/7 lineman). There may be a rule preventing this from happening though for all I know.

We're 8 days away from gameday - who do you guys think will be inactive week 1? My guesses:

Camden Brown - not quite ready for primetime and not as big of a ST contributor as others best I could tell from preseason.
Drew Shelton - obviously not ready to play (no Leverett elevation either, Bass backup C).
Caelen Carson - I think Ameer Speed is active over him for ST purposes.
Tyrus Wheat - this was hard because he plays teams and gives you a little rush, but I still think they go Houston active.
Jonathan Bullard - I have no idea if he's healthy? If he is, then I could see LT Overton being inactive instead.

Demercado, Schoon and Bell/Clark aren't crazy suggestions either, just less likely IMO. What do you guys think? A few different ways this could go given how they prioritize special teams contributors. Knock on wood anti-jinx for no injuries the next 8 days.
With the Tyler Smith news, I assume he gets moved to IR and Nick Leverett is signed to the active roster and is active on Sunday. I honestly think they'd elevate both Marcellus Johnson and Wanya Morris from the practice squad before they'd make Shelton active. Hell, they might even sign someone from outside the organization first. I know he needs development and that comes in the form of practicing, but he's one I'd really like to see catch a tough "sprained ankle" in practice the next couple weeks and have to get put on IR for the season.

Either Wayna Morris or Marcellus Johnson or Shelton will be active.

They only want B. Jones to practice at RT.

Tyler Smith would only practice at LT if he is going to start there.
You forgot Leverett. He's a center which they need with Bass playing OG.

I think we all agree on Shelton?
So 4 others because we will have 8 OL active. One will be Houston or Wheat. Not yet knowing our DL pass rush rotation and how many snaps Miller will take and how Lawrence will do I think Houston is active. I don't think they want either Carson or Speed to see the field. Speed is better on STs. With all the STs guys we have I think Brown is below them on the list and we don't need 6 WRs so it's Brown or Mingo. Last guy is Bullard. I thought he would be IR'd. I don't think he is ready to play. Now we get to PS callups. I think with Bullard out we call up Dunn. So need one more. I can't imagine we want to sit Clark who only made the team because of STs, but not sure we carry 6 safeties on game day, so it's him or Bell and they like Bell. Leverett also gets a callup as the backup C and since he played some OG means Cornelius sits out.

My list: PS callup Dunn, Leverett
Shelton
Wheat
Carson
Brown
Bullard
Clark
Cornelius

With 8 OLineman, the gameday roster is 48. 53-48=5

With 7 OLineman, the roster is 47. 53-47=6

I am not including the potential two call ups from practice squad or the emergency QB.
Yup.

They need all the OL.

We could have a Chaz Green at LT/ RT.

Yeah, I found that one and posted it earlier in this thread.

Is Bullard out? Leverett was promoted to the 53 with Smith going on IR. I don't see Dunn being promoted unless we like him more than Overton, if Bullard is out.

My guess, with no promotions is:
Shelton
Brown
Wheat
Overton (if Bullard is healthy)
Speed

I'd carry Cornelius as the eighth lineman, which means we can have 48 total on the game-day roster (five inactives). The last two spots depend on whether we prefer Wheat over Clark for ST and Carson over Speed.
