The Video Game Thread

I am assuming you have played the original Halo. I haven't played any of them, but I thought about trying this one. However, I have seen a lot of discontent about the game from players who played the original series. I wouldn't have any preconceived ideas because as I said, I never played it. What is the real reason for the disappointment.
A lot of the people dogging it are original Halo fans who are extremely protective of Halo CE (the first game). It’s not necessarily that they may hate remakes....it’s that CE is considered one of the greatest games ever made, so when you start changing visuals, gameplay, levels, etc., some people feel like you’re ‘fixing’ something that wasn’t broken. There’s also a nostalgia factor. If you never played the original, you probably won’t understand why certain changes bother people so much. Personally, I think some of it is just purist mentality...people want the exact game they remember, not a reinterpretation of it.

I love the original Halo. I had hours and hours into that game, and I have some great core memories playing multiplayer with friends....but the remake didn't bother me at all. I thought it looked fantastic, and I had a blast playing through it.

I'd say if the game looks interesting to you, absolutely give it a shot. Don't let all the negativity from the OG Halo crowd scare you away from it. It's a good one.

Not paying 100 bucks for no disc and none of the guys who made all the Rockstar classics worked on the game. It'll be way overpriced modern slop with no physical copy you can return if it sucks. And requiring a pay subscription service to view a freakin ad is just the latest red flag.
Agreed and no Trever to boot! Trever alone would be worth an extra $20! lol

Thanks. I'm putting it in my que.

I'm STILL playing BL4. I've made it UVH4. I stop playing it and then come right back. When I was promoted to UVH3 I inadvertently changed to settings to "True" mode. That setting changes the gameplay to the game thinks you're playing with a full team (I'm solo). I was playing around with the settings and I changed it to see what it would do. I forgot about it until I started playing a day or two later. While I was playing I thought I would never progress because every fight became a slugfest (and very monotonous) with enemies were continually spawning. I died a few times and I briefly stopped playing because continuously fighting a bunch of never-ending enemies got tedious real fast. Thankfully I finally remembered I changed the settings. I turned the "True" mode off and now it's back to normal. Still hard, but now more fun again.

Wow, I haven't fired up BL4 in a while. That could be a fun revisit. I'm sure they've added some content, plus, even with all the hours I dumped into it initially, I STILL have areas of the map I need to explore. Glad you're having fun with it! It's definitely a challenging game, even on normal mode.
I may have to fire it up this week and jump back in and remember how to play.

So, I finished the "Casualties of War" mission in Star Wars Zero Company which based on I can tell is about 45% through the game.

So far I'm enjoying myself with the game, though it definitely has a grindy feel to it in that the process of playing the game is quite repetitive.

  1. At the beginning of a cycle, speak with everyone in your company. (calling it a cycle is exactly what I mean by repetitive)
  2. Heal every character that was injured in the last cycle mission.
  3. Spend your intelligence / contacts to get more resources
  4. Upgrade your characters with new resources. (bonds, weapons, armor, stats, etc)
  5. Select your team for your coming mission and run a real "tactical" mission.
  6. Cycle ends, begin next cycle
Now, I actually enjoy the tactical missions as you have to workout the best way to overcome what they are throwing at you. I've always enjoyed puzzles and that is basically what the tactical missions are. Figure out how to use what you have to overcome onslaught and accomplish the mission objective.

Now, I think this game seems more like an early access as I don't feel there is enough variation in game play and quickly starts to feel repetitive even if I am enjoying the missions which accounts for probably 80%-90% of the gameplay time.

I see several people complain about bugs, but I've only experienced one where I couldn't revive a player (due to it's odd location against other objects) which resulted in not having a way to win the mission and had to redo that mission.

People also report the game crashing, but I have yet to experience the game crash. with probably 15-18 hours into it.

So, I think it's a decent game, but needs more variation in gameplay content (other things to do than the items listed in the cycle above) and some more polish. I love the fact that you get normal characters, but you also can have a Mandalorian and a Jedi on your team which have some different combat styles / actions which is nice.

The "bonds" aspect is cool since they develop bonds between each other which create new and enhanced abilities. I also love the fact that your characters can be perma-killed (enabled by default, but can be turned off at a cost) losing the "bonds" they developed. (I've already had two die)

Has anyone else started playing it?

Has anybody downloaded the Onimusha: Way of the Sword, demo? It’s pretty good. The combat was a lot of fun.

Reviews just came out and it did well overall. A lot of very high scores.

I used to love the Onimusha games back on PS2. They were awesome back in their day.

I’m gonna buy it when it comes out Friday.

Actually, I just popped in this thread to discuss it.

I got angry with Star Wars Zero Company. There is a bug that doesn't let you res a player. I think it's intentional to have something that prevents you from doing it if you can't get an angle on the body, but even having angles, some of the map objects still prevent it even if you are 90 degrees from it. So, I stopped playing that after it did it 3 times in a row on a single mission and that prevents you from finishing.

Anyhow, I picked up Onimusha: Way of the Sword and have been playing it. I'm not too far in I just beat Sasaki Ganryu (ran him off anyhow) and so far I'm really enjoying it!

Good stuff.

Anybody going to give Wolverine a spin? I have it “Gamelocked” on my GameFly queue (meaning they’ll guarantee sending it to me). Seems like the perfect game for that, as I want to try it, but I’ve read it’s pretty linear and short (around 15 hours).

I love the Spider-Man games, and Insomniac did Wolverine, so I’m hopeful it’s good.

I'm definitely going to play it, it's just a matter of when. My free time is being consumed by football, I just need to find the time.

Was Spider-Man 2 worth it? I've played the other two, but I was trigger shy about Spider-Man 2 because it had substantially lower ratings than the other two. The combat is great on them.

If the Cowboys continue to look like the team that played last night, three hours a week for video games maybe available.

I enjoyed it. I thought the story was great, the game throws you right into the action, and the map is bigger. They also added the ability to glide around the city with the Web Wings, which is a pretty cool addition. Other than that, though, it’s still very much the same game at its core. Same combat mechanics, same basic ideas.....big map, lots of random things to do around the map, and a storyline you can take on at your own pace. I think if you enjoyed the first one, you would enjoy this one.

Thanks. I know the first Spider-Man was actually a pretty big / long game whereas Miles Morales was definitely quite a bit smaller. It's good to hear SM2 is a good sized game.
