What's going on with Caleb Downs?

I get he’s a rookie but what’s his best position? I think he was at least noticeable when he was in slot. The last two games he’s been invincible. Who was the last rookie safety who made a difference? Safeties don't get paid as much as Cbs or DE's bc their impact on games is limited. Thats why the Giants picked the OT instead of Downs. Not all positions are equally important. Downs is playing in a disorganized mess of a scheme right now that is making all the players look like dog poop. Literally there is nobody on defense having a pro bowl caliber season and most don't even rank in the top 30 at their positions on PPF. Downs is one of the few players that does rank as league average or better.

He’s small

He is listed as 6-0, 210 on the team website. Not exactly small. You are just seeing him with 250 to 300 pound men out there.

Being hung out to dry by the offense the whole 2nd qtr even though they shut the bucs out after the opening drive likely took a bit off his top end.

Might SEEM like I'm justpicking on Caleb there....but that one play defines are whole run defense. Bucky looked like he was running barrel drills.

Bingo. Nobody looks like they know what to do. But we are playing guys who don't belong in the NFL. Revel is pure trash and we had him starting at CB. Thats how an UDFA rookie QB looked better than our 60M QB.

Where does the too small stuff come from? Have you seen his build? The dude is solid, hits hard, and doesn't shy away from tackles.

Injuries moved him from slot back to safety. It shows in the slot with a 170 lb Ready Stewart getting torched all day.

if i remember correctly they want him playing near the line of scrimmage but the rash of secondary injuries has forced them to play home over the top.

He had a bad game against the Bucs, for sure. But he has played very well in four other games. I would cut him some slack. The entire team was horrible against the Bucs.

If you look at this forum from a 1,000-foot view, pretty much every player on the defense has been slandered on this board. lol I'd say it's way more the defensive scheme than the player(s). CP isn't ready for this position.....IMO

He plays for a high school coordinator who doesn't know how to use players.

Gary and Clark were way better than this with the Packers.

Quinnen was way better than this with the Jets.

Thompson was way better than this with the Cardinals.

Etc.

when one or two players regress its the players fault. when its every player its the coordinator. every player on D is playing worse. same thing happened with Eberturd. its clearly the system and coordinators that are the problem. brian flores or any other good coordinator with these same Cowboys players will look much different. CP will be looking for a new job after this season.

His strength is run support. Thats why he flashed playing big nickel in early games and disappeared playing free vs Tampa.
Not sure why anyone would have compared a player with 2 interceptions in college to Ed Reed?
