Ferguson has been the victim of a bad loss overreaction the fumble he had on that toss pitch play contact was being made by the defender as the ball was coming into his grasp and the intercepted tip pass in the Bucs game was a little high and again, he was being hit from the back by the defender. You would like for him to catch it but earlier in the game Span-Ford had an almost identical play on a better pass but the defender could not get to the tipped pass. Ferg is a good tight end they need him. Some thoughts to ponder looking a few months down the road in 2027. What moves could the Cowboys make to the roster and salary cap? Let's start with the 3 worst contracts we are all complaining about. We'll get to Dak in a minute.
I spent some time at Over The Cap and this is what I found. If the Cowboys cut DaRon Bland, Jake Ferguson and Terence Steele after the 2026 season, the big question is how much 2027 salary-cap room they would create after accounting for dead money??? If my approxamite numbers are off a little it won't impact the message.
Player - Projected 2027 cap hit - Potential 2027 cap savings - 2028 dead cap hit
DaRon Bland - $19.46M - ~$13.0M - $6.46M
Jake Ferguson - $10.60M - ~$7.0M - $3.6M
Terence Steele - $15.23M - ~$9.0M - $6.23M
Totals - $45.29M - ~$29.0M - $16.29M
The Cowboys could free up roughly $29 million for the 2027 season, but the savings come with a future cap cost (not bad and the salary cap will of course only go up) and the need to replace three players which is huge concern. Or is it? Are there players on the roster who can step into their roles? Use the money on FA's. Draft their replacements? All 3???
Another reason I looked into all this is the big elephant in the room. Dak is scheduled for an $86.03 million cap hit in 2028.
Who the hell thought that was a good idea?????????? Yeah I know....
