What if the Cowboys cut Bland, Ferguson, and Steele next year?

Some thoughts to ponder looking a few months down the road in 2027. What moves could the Cowboys make to the roster and salary cap? Let's start with the 3 worst contracts we are all complaining about. We'll get to Dak in a minute.

I spent some time at Over The Cap and this is what I found. If the Cowboys cut DaRon Bland, Jake Ferguson and Terence Steele after the 2026 season, the big question is how much 2027 salary-cap room they would create after accounting for dead money??? If my approxamite numbers are off a little it won't impact the message.

Player - Projected 2027 cap hit - Potential 2027 cap savings - 2028 dead cap hit

DaRon Bland - $19.46M - ~$13.0M - $6.46M
Jake Ferguson - $10.60M - ~$7.0M - $3.6M
Terence Steele - $15.23M - ~$9.0M - $6.23M

Totals - $45.29M - ~$29.0M - $16.29M

The Cowboys could free up roughly $29 million for the 2027 season, but the savings come with a future cap cost (not bad and the salary cap will of course only go up) and the need to replace three players which is huge concern. Or is it? Are there players on the roster who can step into their roles? Use the money on FA's. Draft their replacements? All 3???

Another reason I looked into all this is the big elephant in the room. Dak is scheduled for an $86.03 million cap hit in 2028.

Who the hell thought that was a good idea?????????? Yeah I know....
Ferguson has been the victim of a bad loss overreaction the fumble he had on that toss pitch play contact was being made by the defender as the ball was coming into his grasp and the intercepted tip pass in the Bucs game was a little high and again, he was being hit from the back by the defender. You would like for him to catch it but earlier in the game Span-Ford had an almost identical play on a better pass but the defender could not get to the tipped pass. Ferg is a good tight end they need him.

That would be good thing.
Good research

He's been below average for the past 2 years. He's been bad all year a few of his best plays he's wide open due to the other real threats. On Pff he's 49.0 and 33rd of 33rd of other graded tight ends. There is no way anyone can say he has been good this year.

But just like when Garrett was coach I wonder how much is Schottys fault.

Your right I can't but Shotty calling plays is the reason i believe Ferg is struggling he only gets the ball in the same spots and only on passing downs when the defense is expecting it. If Shotty's playcalling was less predictable maybe we would see the GOTI offense, we were expecting

......then Schoonmaker turns into the next Travis Kelce.

Its about time we get rid of progress stoppers like Ferguson and Sponge-Fjord

I don't think cutting Steele would do much this year or next, but others aren't worth their salaries, who would benefit us more by cutting them. I posted this in another thread:

If you make Bland a June 1st cut, it saves us 13 million; it sounds like a perfect first-year salary-hit cost for JPJ.

On top of that June 1st cut
Clark would save you 20 million, Gary- 5.6, Fergy -7.

Cutting Hunter and Bell outright would save you 5.8 million total.

So even before we restructure Dak, CD, or Q, we'll be close to having enough to re-sign JPJ, Cobie, Otito, and Pickens.

There's really no point to cut Steele because you don't save anything. He's been fine anyway.

Bland and Ferg save you about $20m as post-June 1

Oh don’t worry. Dak will get an extension next year.

Cutting them is a decision down the road

Benching them sends signals now.....
Can't let team get comfortable with the culture of looseing.
Getting beat is one thing.....just poor performance becomes contagious

Goes for players & coaches
lol. Oh it’s so cute you think BS has the authority to bench two guys Jerry paid.

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

These are exactly the three players and contracts I’d be looking to get out of.

In my opinion, it’s a foregone conclusion that this is what will happen.

He fumbles at an alarming rate. He fumbles once every 19 touches, which is by far the worst rate in the NFL. Every time I see him catch a ball, I hold my breath thinking he's going to fumble. I hope he is benched for the GB game. Give Spann-Ford those opportunities.

I think their plan is to strip it down in 2028, which is why they are trying to make a push now.

Should be a done deal.

I think you keep bland and Ferguson. In ‘28 look to cut Williams he’ll count about $25m

Still think you try to trade those guys get something back. Even 5th rounders

$30m of that was this years restructure.

Aggressive teams with cash all keep maxing the credit card every year. Broncos, Rams, Panthers and this years Cowboys

The teams that try to balance the books each year, as much as they can, are the cash poor family owned teams like the Bengals, Steelers, Titans and Colts.

The Pack are obviously the most extreme outlier because their corporation requires it every year.
