I have not given up on Schottenheimer as head coach.
While I’m frustrated with Parker’s defense, I have not given up on him either because I think the defense would stink in any scheme due to a terrible LB group, no quality edge rushers who excel in at least 1 area (Parsons- pass rush; DLaw- run defense), a bunch of rental vets who seem to be doing their own thing out there, and injuries to the secondary.
However, what if Jerry were to fire Schotty?
My thought: maybe Jerry has been wrong in hiring offensive minded coaches just because that’s where our most talent is. Maybe there are lots of young play callers who could be successful with the offense.
Maybe, just maybe, the Cowboys would be better served hiring a strong, experienced, proven defensive minded head coach who could get the most out of this group while identifying what is needed additionally.
In other words, let the young up and comer who needs experience grow with an elite offense while the head coach is perhaps a proven defensive architect and play caller who can get that group where it needs to be while also influencing the offensive coordinator’s playcalling at times to help the defensive side of the ball.
There are many top DCs who would take the head coaching job. There are many young OCs, even Adams, who could grow and develop with an elite group where little play-calling mistakes don’t have as much impact. It’s hard to hire away great DC’s without offering a promotion.
Just a thought. It’s been decades since this team could stop the run. We’ve had great pass rushers at times; we’ve had guys like Quinn who would sell out on stunts and blitzes; but the downfall has always been good teams who run the ball down our throats. Object #1 for any effective defense is stopping the run…period.
