You get what you pay for

The Dallas Cowboys are easily the most profitable sports franchise in the US and close to being so in the entire world.

And yet this organization with a world class stadium, world class team facilities, and the highest value in the NFL is paying its head coach and assistant coaches in the bottom of the league’s pay scale. When there is no cap on coaches pay, why is this happening? When it comes to coaching, you usually get what you pay for.

It doesn’t take a football expert to know that to win a championship in the NFL, or even get close, it requires an outstanding head coach and staff. Knowing that, how much does this franchise value its coaches? Surely we are hiring the best possible candidates, and willing to spend at the same high level as our facilities to get the best coach that gives us the best chance to win, right?

Brian Schottenheimer was the guy our owner believes is worthy of leading the storied Dallas Cowboys to a championship. A guy with no experience at any level as a HC, and no other team was even interested in interviewing.

How much is Schotty valued by this organization ? His $4.5 million salary puts him right at the bottom of pay for non-interim NFL head coaches. The bengals Zac Taylor reportedly makes what Schotty makes. The only NFL HC making less is the browns HC Todd Monken. Even when Mike McCarthy was here - a man with a SB ring on his resume - was never even the highest paid NFC East HC, lol.

So knowing it requires a strong, talented head coach to win big in this league, not only did Jerry pick a guy no one else wanted to interview, he pays whoever he hires chicken feed.

There are several old sayings that apply here:
  • You get what you pay for.
  • Whatever you value most, you pay for.
  • If winning is the goal, you must be willing to pay for it.
We’ve had six different head coaches in the 21st century. Two of those six had great resumes and a proven track record of success in this league.(Parcells and Big Mac) The other four - Campo, Wade, Garrett and now Schotty - are not serious hires.

You get what you pay for.
Not to mention the revolving door at DC

Did we get what we pay for a 60 millions QB? That is the answer I like to get first.

We get it, the organization sucks. You’ve told us pretty much daily and many others hourly say the same thing. I don’t get why people enjoy it so much. Try and enjoy the games win, lose or tie. It’s ok to complain. Lord knows there’s a lot to complain about but doing it every day and others in every thread creates such a depressing forum.
Then leave

Salary is usually commensurate with leadership, and authority.

Low salaried stooges guarantee that Mr Jones remains leader, authoritarian and dictator.

Great post and more evidence Jerry has zero designs in building a championship team. Let me count the ways:
1. Blind players w sun at home
2. Low ball all head coaches’ salaries
3. Lifetime dress up GM
4. Real hc Jerry
5. Business as usual w a new paint job on the Titanic
6. Constantly giving the finger to his own fans
7. Groping women without consent

Thank you for reliably commented on 100% of BobHaze’s threads to reprimand him for having the audacity to express his opinion on an opinions forum. Thank you for doing this as it ensures his posts get many more pages added because you always swoop in with your forum cardboard sheriffs badge and insist it’s not right to voice an opinion contrary to yours. I see your cardboard sheriffs badge but I don’t see moderator by your name. Must be a typo.

Jerry could have had Sean Payton. Those two are actually friends, but no way Jerry was paying that type of money for a HC.

Don’t go telling me that Payton isn’t that great without considering what’s here now….and who do you want finding and developing the next QB. I’ll take the guy who brought Romo along over Shoddy. Thanks.

Payton was the best we could have ever done at HC, but he makes probably about 15m a year more than Shoddy. Considering what’s at stake and the numbers involved, that’s nothing….but not to those two. Hope it’s worth it for them. They go out of their way to never have a down season (not going well) but what do they figure is going to happen when Dak is gone? Draft another fourth rounder? An UDFA? Yeah good luck.

If there IS actually a plan, it makes no sense.
And I'll add that Payton (or someone of his stature) would demand some control in player/personal decisions, and Jerry will NEVER do that. He did with Jimmy and Bill and they got the credit, which is what Jerry is really all about. If we did bring in Payton, and he had won, he would have received the credit, not Jerry, and Jerry's ego can't deal with that.

Right. Parcells didn’t win but he took an annual 5-11 roster and turned it into one that could get a one seed under Wade. Developed Romo also.

Then Jerry stepped in and said ‘thanks, but I’ll take it from here,’ and destroyed that the same way he did what Jimmy built.

Parcells as much as said that would happen on his way out.

“I bought myself an occupation.” I can’t believe Jerry actually had the nerve to say that to fans.
You-, parecells wasn’t in it just for a check, he legit made that terrible team better.

The team does not have a world class owner. He’s a cheap, football ignorant, NFL franchise owner who only wants to attend ownership meetings and look like he’s the equal to other franchise owners. He isn’t. And has proved it.

A year or two ago....he went into the locker room to celebrate a fairly "meaningless" win with the players.

Acting like it was an NFC championship game.

Or we could have had Ben Johnson. Or Vrable

Its a forum and how the team performs is how most of the conversation and topis will be geared towards. The team is playing poorly, the head coach is awful (you loved the hire), and the negatives far out weight any positives. Winning solves most of these problems.

If you cant handle it, log off.

At ease private.

Unfortunately the Cowboys are depressing now and these forums are going to reflect the current status and vibe.

I understand your premise, but we've had seven coaches since our last Super Bowl. None of them have reached an NFC Championship Game. Pedigree didn't matter. Pay didn't matter. All that mattered is the men in charge remained the same.

I think there's too much focus on the coaches when we fail. I think there's too much focus on the players when we fail. Yes, those things could be better. But I think not having who we deem as the best distracts us from the one problem that has existed since Jimmy left and has remained in place throughout all these failures.

Look, I'm not saying anything can be done about that problem, so we keep cycling through coaches and players. I'm just saying I think a lot of fans get focused on the scapegoats.

I don't really worry about who coaches this team. I have my opinions about who it should be, but I also believe that the circumstances here may be impossible to overcome for any of them. Same with the players. There are multiple decisions I would make differently, but I can't blame the players that we have for failure when the front office is the ones responsible for building this roster. The front office is responsible for putting together the staff. And it doesn't take much to see that it isn't good enough at that.
