Under what circumstances can this defense become good?

This season?

Health and schedule should make a difference as much as anything.

It's not going to be "good" though.

The Bucs game was a total cringe, especially for our defense. Yet, we all know Christian Parker is new and a lot of players are new. Players need to commit their defensive scheme to muscle memory, and it doesn't happen overnight. Did I think they would be a lot farther along than they showed? Absolutely. It was painful to watch how they kept missing assignments and getting burned. It could be a train wreck season, but I wouldn't say at this point that that's inevitable. Maybe these guys can still gel and become cohesive and thus a lot better. I don't mean to post an empty pep talk. I'm not saying if they work hard, they can definitely become a top 5 defense. But things can change quickly in athletics. We've seen teams stink it up in the first part of the season and then get it together with winning streaks down the stretch. And I don't think it would be smart to fire a defensive coordinator after only 5 games.

I'm not saying I'm convinced that this D will definitely become great. I'm just wondering if it might be able to improve, thus giving this team a better chance to win. I also don't think the NFC East is looking like all that strong of a division, at least it isn't from what we've seen so far.
Well the great news is that the 5 game experiment at DC has been addressed by adding an experienced competent coach to straighten it out.

I'm on record as saying that the situation should be evaluated and judged by week 9 but Jerry doesn't have the patience I do

When the team drafts or trades for an all-world edge player to go along with a one time All-Pro DT. Once they have a double digit game changing edge rusher to go with Q. Williams and Kenny Clark then the defense will have a chance to be really good.

Until then...no chance.

Play tougher along the LOS. No more free releases for wr's. Got to give the rushers another half second to get home.

May be we don’t have talent estimators for defense , we could have signed the free agent like Elijah ( Pats did ) and he is a Bargain , edge wrecker. But we have Gary and Miller , sigh

The answer to this question is the same as the answer to all other Cowboys negatives - a new, actually professional GM that is accountable for his job performance.
This team has needed that for some 3 decades now. To say Jones has a blind spot for that would be a massive understatement. Everyone has blind spots, but Jerry's blind spot is the size of the Titanic.

An exorcism followed by a colonscopy.

Good defenses are built around a core of players that have been together for at least a few years. They know each other. They become like a family. Each of them wants to succeed for the sake of the others.

I have known of a few very rare exceptions. In the 70s Washington's coach, George Allen, traded away several draft picks for veterans who bonded quickly under their volatile HC.

The Cowboys must play selfless team defense. This cannot be initiated by a coach. It must come from the players themselves.

•holding onto the turn-overs they create...int's,recovering fumbles,etc...would help.
•getting the opposing qb in the dirt.
•tighter coverage on receivers and maybe the te.
both is a pipe dream.
one or the other would be nice.
those 3 showing up consistently would be a welcome sight.
i have given up hope of ever seeing in my lifetime a cowboys defense that stops the run.
but those 3 i mentioned up top plus the addition of a competent defensive coach like mike pettine would bring a level of excitement back to this fan.
not that my level of excitement matters to anyone but me.
go☆cowboys.

This team, once again, doesn't have starting capable linebackers other than Barham. Winters is garbage and Overshown should never be depended on as a starter. Front office malpractice. Just because you're "busy" with bringing in players, doesn't mean you're bringing in the CORRECT players.

Smart *** answer but also probably a completely true answer? When we get a new GM. I firmly believe Jerry doesn't, at its core, how to make a legitimate defense.

I don't know. I guess if the coverage improves? Theoretically, we have some talented players (once healthy).

The pass rush is just DOA though. So I don't think good coverage will do much for us.
