How about this: both teams are completely equal except for the QB (purely a hypothetical question, I know). Who would you choose?

I really don't have a dog in this fight. I'd take either one. They're both great QB's. My point was that you don't base that decision solely based on one's playoff record. That's just asinine.

I agree with you. It WAS a rather simplistic question.

That's the reason Peyton is rated so highly he carries his teams but he can't carry them in the playoffs. The season Peyton won it all his TD to turnover ratio in the playoffs and SB was 3-7. His passer rating was only 70.5 during the postseason. Against Baltimore his passer rating was 39.6 and he escaped with a win. He was damn lucky he was going up against Rex Grossman in the SB or he probably wouldn't have a championship. Peyton was losing to Brady every year in the playoffs and Eli's beaten Brady twice in the SB. I don't care what anyone says Peyton is overrated. Yes he's a great QB but far from the greatest QB ever.

Brady had better teams than Peyton virtually every year they met in the playoffs.

Eli's Giants got hot at the right time and rode a dominant defensive line, not Eli Manning, to the championship.

I love how small sample sizes are used to define entire player's careers...sometimes...usually depends on what side of an argument someone is on and what they are subsequently trying to prove.

Montana won championships with 2 completely different SF teams. In 81 he won a SB with Ricky Patton, Earl Cooper Johnny Davis, Walt Easley and Paul Hofer as his main rushing threats none of which averaged more than 3.6 yards a carry. He won with Dwight Clark, Freddie Solomon, Earl Cooper and Charlie Young as his main receiving threats. Practically the same team went 6-10 the year before and went 3-6 the year after during the 82 strike season. That wasn't a high caliber team in 81 but it was led by a high caliber QB who made that team special by bringing them from behind in a game they should have lost.

Eight years later Montana won a championship with a completely different SF team. In 4 SB appearances Montana didn't suffer a single turnover and won one of his championships on a last ditch drive with only seconds remaining. Mannings career has been made off his consistent regular season performances and his 4 league MVP awards. He's been nothing special in postseason where he has a losing record and has only 5 more TD's than turnovers.
I would take Montana also. The only other QB I would consider taking above Montana would be Staubach, he basically did the same thing you mentioned taking two totally different teams to SB championships and numerous memorable playoff games, he was just a great leader and I always felt the Cowboys had a chance with him behind center. Currently I would still take Tom Brady over both Mannings.

The Cowboys could win and Romo could go for 350 yds, 5 TD's and 1 INT and some folks would rant about the INT.

I would agree if I had something to compare this to. Unfortunately, this team hasn't won a game by 5 touchdowns in a long time. Nice hypothetical dream all wrapped in one comment.

Brady is a better QB than Peyton Manning his resume backs it up. Eli's Giants were 10-6 in 07 and ended up beating an 18-0 NE team in the SB that was heavily favored. Brady put up 50 TD's that season, NE was the most dominate NFL team I had ever seen. Eli outplayed Brady in the SB and was named the games MVP. Eli's Giants were 9-7 in 2011 and beat a 13-3 NE team that was riding a 10 game winning streak into the SB. Again the Giants were underdogs and again Eli outplayed Brady winning another SB MVP award.

The Giants weren't considered the better team entering either game with NE but in big games Eli has stepped and outplayed the opposing QB. The Packers were 15-1 in 2011 and were clearly a better team than the 9-7 Giants but again Eli stepped up in the playoffs and outplayed Rodgers the league MVP that year. It's not about which QB is playing for the better team it's about which QB plays the best when it's all on the line.

Now that's just ridiculous.

Maybe but I've seen debates on it. The more postseason game losing int's Peyton throws the more debatable it becomes. Eli has been a better big game QB than Peyton that can't be argued.

First...As to Peyton Manning vs. Brady...I am absolutely confident that if you give Peyton all those top 5 defenses back when he was in his prime he wins those same Superbowls that Brady does. Since Brady has become a prolific NFL QB he has exactly 0 superbowl titles.

Now Eli Manning? Oh please. First you exaggerate how good that Patriots team was in 2007. The big difference is that that team ran up the score. And if you recall that New England team peaked early with a bunch of dominant wins but in the final 6 weeks of the season they won 3 games by 3 points each.

In the Superbowl he played better than Brady (barely virtually same yardage and eli had 2 tds to Brady's 1 but he also threw a pick where Brady did not).

Brady himself was sacked 5 times in the superbowl and repeatedly harassed. That Patriots team wins comfortably if not for the other worldly great performance by that defensive line. And you want to talk about how good Eli was? Dude had 549 yards (TOTAL) in the 3 games leading up to the superbowl. Hardly fits your "QB plays the best when it's all on the line" narrative that you picked up from ESPN.

Yes it can. Go look at the actual numbers. Hell during that 2007 superbowl run Eli Manning threw the ball just 18 times against us in the playoffs and didn't crack 200 yards in his 1st two playoff wins. That's what you call playing better in big games?

Such a joke how the media has rehabilitated Eli's image. If his last name was not Manning nobody would be calling him elite. He'd be a very rich man's Trent Dilfer.

No one is basing it just off their playoff record or everyone would have Eli ahead of Peyton. Don't say you would take either one pick one. If you had one game to win and every dime you had depended on that one game who would you pick in their primes Peyton or Montana and why? Joe Montana's career was built by coming through in the clutch in do or die games. In his 4 SB appearances he had an 11-0 TD to turnover ratio and never had a passer rating lower than 100.0. During the postseason in 89 which included 2 playoff games and the SB his passer rating was an incredible 146.4. Even the NFLN was smart enough to rate him as the greatest QB in history and 4th greatest player all-time.

I would love to see if anyone could come up with one logical reason why they would pick Peyton Manning over Joe Montana if they had one game to win and everything riding on it. The true mark of a great QB is being able to get it done when they're down to their last drive and it's all on the line. No QB was better in that situation than Montana. Go back to the 88 SB SF vs Cinn and listen to Sam Wyche as he was pacing the sidelines watching Montana drive SF down the field against his defense in the final seconds. You'll never see or hear a HC in that situation look and sound so resigned to their teams fate.

NE's defense was ranked 24th in 2001 when Brady won his first SB. Their defense was ranked 7th in 2003 when Brady won his 2nd SB and it was ranked 9th in 2004 when Brady won his 3rd and last SB. So much for your claim that he had top 5 defenses. Defense no longer wins championships it's a pass happy offensive league. It's a copy cat league and teams have caught up to what NE is doing with multiple WR/TE sets. The 2 SB's NE lost to NY were because they couldn't stop the Giants passing attack on last ditch drives and Brady didn't produce like he did during the regular season those years. When the Giants and Pats played in the SB in 2011 they had the 2 lowest ranked defenses to ever play in the SB. The Ravens won the SB last season with the lowest ranked defense they've had in years. They had much better defenses in 08 and 09 but lost back to back AFC title games because Joe Flacco couldn't produce and turned the ball over multiple times when it was all on the line. Like I said it comes down to QB's in make or break games.

The last 2 SB winning teams the Giants and Ravens had defenses that were ranked 27th and 17th. Playoff games and SB's come down to QB's and Peyton Manning has struggled with turnovers in postseason. He's been outplayed by the opposing QB. As for your claim that I exaggerated how good the 2007 Pats were dude they were 18-0 heading into the SB. LOL Granted they faded some near the end of that season but they stayed undefeated until the SB. While they were coming down the Giants were moving up but NE still managed to put up 38 points on the Giants in the 07 season finale. The Giants D stepped up in the SB but the game still came down to Eli having to make plays to pull the game out. The Giants were behind in both SB's to NE in the final minutes and Eli brought them back.

Eli was sacked 6 times and hit 22 times by a relentless top 5 SF defense that harassed him all night in the 2011 NFC title game but that didn't prevent him from getting the job done. Eli may have only put up 549 yards in 3 games leading up to the 07 SB but he had no turnovers in those games and had his most prolific yardage game in the SB where he outplayed Brady. Outplaying the opposing QB in the SB does fit with my "whichever QB plays the best when it's all on the line usually wins the game" narrative.

In 2001 New England was 6th in points given up. In 2003 no team gave up fewer points than the Patriots. In 2004 only 1 team gave up fewer points than the patriots. I think top 5 fits.

And in all this posting you didn't touch on the fact that in two playoff wins in that 2007 season you are talking about Eli threw for less than 200 yards. You claim Eli came up big in the playoffs and that is the reason we are to believe that he plays his best in the playoffs.

Again i'm going to say this very slowly....in that 2007 playoff run by the giants Eli never threw for 300 yards or 3 tds in a game. In half of his 4 games he threw for 185 yards or less. So a helmet miracle catch is what gives Eli some kind of playoff street cred?

You can't be serious.

How anyone can look past Eli throwing for 549 yards in 3 games and call him some kind of big game player blows my mind.

Stop watching ESPN. I have nothing against the worldwide leader but you clearly are being unduly influenced by soundbites designed to be catchy and 15 seconds long. That's the only way you could possibly be trying to make this argument.
