Does Garrett Have the stroke to start DeVonte Holloman?

Beat me to it. The rookie has earned the right to start. Durant and Sims are JAGs

I love what I've seen from Holloman. And wouldn't be surprised if he's not getting a lot of playing time come mid season. Maybe even starting. For now I imagine the coaching staff is probably more comfortable going with the experience of Durant. At least for the beginning of the season.

Staffs are notorious for hesitating to replace veterans unless there is overwhelming evidence. Holloman is not there yet

Definitely not there yet. Has the guy made any plays vs opposing starters? Probably not.

Yes. I know that he probably hasn't even played vs starters.

That's my point

This is where I'm at with the kid. Don't get me wrong, I like Holloman a lot but he hasn't done anything against a starting caliber offense. That's not his fault. He can only take advantage of the opportunities that he's given.

I remember when Holloman had his pick six in the Miami game Garrett had alluded to the fact that Holloman was out of position on his assignment and got lucky by being at the wrong spot at the right time. A veteran QB will eat a kid like that's lunch. Holloman has HUGE upside but he needs to ease into his role. It wouldn't surprise me to see him starting at some point this season and wouldn't surprise me to not see him start this season. I think the kid gets some playing time regardless.

Considering he was hardly mentioned during OTAs he's been a pleasant surprise. His first action will probably be on passing downs. He said his biggest need for improvement was taking on blocks versus the run and that's what I noticed too.

I believe Holloman is the weak side linebacker on the depth chart, backing up Carter, so you'd be replacing Carter, not Durant/Sims who are playing strong side....Holloman has played well but he's not ready to start, not even close...

If linebacker were a position of weakness on the team, a rookie could start, but linebacker is one of the strengths of this defense. No need to start a rookie and worry about rookie mistakes.

You have two huge, athletic LBers in Lee and Carter. Both fast and instinctive.

It would be wise for the unit to have a savy vet play beside them just for assignments.

IMO that is the way to start... and if Holloman proves he can be where he is suppose to be, give him the nod later down the road.

Not like there won't be injuries.

Ernie Sims had a great camp. Easy to call him a jag since he hasn't been on the field, but I expect good things from him, and consistency that I don't think we'll get from Holloman yet. It would be great to see him develop so that we could save money next year on one of these veteran players if not both of them.

The Kid has clearly out played Durand and Sims.. For years it has taken injuries for a young guy to earn playing time... The law firm of Lee, Carter and Holloman...

After seeing Demarco Murray standing on the sidelines until the 2nd half yesterday... I'm hoping that maybe things have changed in Dallas and that if Holloman looks good enough that he will start.

Fans love Hollman's preseason highlight reel. But it's EVERY play the coordinator needs to be concerned about.

He'll get on the field eventually this year. He better take advantage when he does.

Was there ever an explanation for that? He certainly came in and played like he had something to prove.

What do you mean, does Garrett have the stroke? As in, start him over Kiffin's wishes?

Sims was playing very well before he for hurt. I wouldn't call him a Jag but I'm not impressed with Durant. I said it before that Holloman was my favorite pick in the draft and once he gets it he is going to make the lB core stout. But I would like to see Sims over Durant right now

Yep. It's because avoiding one bad play is more important than making one good one. All of the SLBs have played at a fairly high level here. We're lucky to have some options at that position given how few resources we've actually dedicated to it.
