DFW-Gosselin: It's surprising the Cowboys neglected their two biggest needs

On any surprises Cowboys made in final roster moves:

Gosselin: The surprise to me is they didn’t claim, on waivers, an offensive lineman and a defensive lineman. These two units are paper thin. They’re the weakness of the team, those two fronts. And this is a division, historically, the team that has the best blocking front and defensive front, win. Go back to the Hogs, Joe Gibbs, the Bill Parcells Giants, Jimmy Johnson’s Cowboys — you have to be strong on the offensive and defensive line in the (NFC) East to win, and that’s the Cowboys’ weakness heading into the year.

Fraley: I think the interior on both sides of the ball is substandard. The offensive line, I think again, is a big problem, and I don’t see where the defensive front is there to play the Monte Kiffin defense. I don’t see the depth there. I don’t see the personnel there. I think they’re weak on both sides of the ball up front. That to me is somewhat surprising.

I guess Gosselin doesn't think we could trade or pick up some cut vets we have an eye on.

I agree with him for once - name a few Jobber ?

Well that last roster spot most likely is going to OL or Dl.

I think we go O or D lineman to fill our 53 but I think both units are better than last year.

Yeah, the line situation is still frustrating and limits Dallas' upside.
I'm hoping the team is better overall, but once again they are painting Romo into a helpless corner on offense and really rolling the dice ( depth wise) on dline.

I'm expecting them to be better, nevertheless.

It's still early and now we have a few extra 7th rounders as trade ammunition...

So should you just claim people just to claim them if you don't like them for your team? I don't get it. Who was out there?

We neglected our two biggest needs, but it's sure as Sunday not surprising. Heck, I've come to expect it.

I think many of us expressed amazement at only one DL taken in entire draft ...but with comments from Kiffin that there were so many DL he had to find seat on floor during meeting it isn't entirely surprising there wasn't sense of urgency there.

Can't really fix your needs on other teams final cuts anyways, this should have been addressed in FA and the draft

Because now is when everyone gets the best lineman. Not before training camp.

This is very true. Plugging major depth holes is not what roster cutdowns are for. If your team is any good, anyway.

Not sure they neglected the OL if factoring in 1st round pick Travis Frederick and also OG Ron Leary. Those are 2 new starters on the interior, which has been a major weakness. They've drafted 2 O-Linemen in the 1st round in the last 3 drafts, and also potentially rejuvenated Free with a half-price pay cut. Depth may now come in the form of guys who were counted on to be starters last year eg: Costa, Bernadeau, etc.

Injuries to Rat, Spencer & Crawford, no doubt hampers the DL. Aside from not drafting someone, I was surprised they didn't atleast go after a guy like Israel Idonije...who despite his age (32 y/o), was versatile & productive in his 3 years with Marinelli as his DC, recording 20.5 of his 28.5 career sacks in that 3 year span (including 8 in 2010 & 7.5 in 2012). He also had 2 sacks this preseason & signed a very cap friendly deal (1-year/$840,000), with the Lions.
