Salary cap adjustments

You don't get any savings for Demarcus Ware and Miles Austin until June 2nd, until then their full cap hits remain in effect, even if they are designated as June 1st cut and released in March.

Dallas has to get under the salary cap by March 11th.

Ahh march 11th, D DAY.

because most place only calculate the salaries. and have a note somewhere under it showing the dead money like over the cap.

Over the Cap includes the Dead Money. If you look it's 94.3m for salaries of the top 51, 41.7 for pro-rated bonus, 800k for workout bonus and 11.8 in dead money. That equals 148.6m minus the expected cap and rollover of 127.9m for a total of 20.7 over.

94.3 salary
41.7 prorate
00.8 workout
11.8 dead
148.6 total
127.9 cap
(20.7)

OP was a bit off base, but great topic none the less. I think more and more people are beginning to understand the necessary moves that have to be made here.

Keeping Ware makes no sense. Emmitt Smith was a year older than Ware when we released him, and he was still more productive at his position. Also was a super bowl mvp.

If Jerry doesn't release Ware or get him to take a very substantial pay cut, he will be a ballast on this team.

The team will be in great shape if we make the moves that are necessary to make here.

We could go into free agency with about 14 million under the cap in March. We lose some money immediately when we have to tender Bailey and a bit for Jones. Putting an ERFA tender on Jones, and giving Bailey a 2nd round tender leaves us 11.3 million under the cap going into march. That being said, it would probably be wiser to sign Bailey long term, and not have to pay him so much in 2014. That could save us anywhere from 500k to a million dollars on the cap.

We can be pretty aggressive in free agency with that type of space. Then in June we can get another 3 million by releasing Austin.

I could see us being really good next year with the right moves in free agency and the draft.

People who keep saying we should keep Ware have no idea how much that guy is weighing the defense down.

Exactly. If they keep Ware this year, they have to restructure his contract. That means he will be even harder to cut next year. That means his cap commitment for the next 2 years will be over 33m. So he not only needs to be good next year, but in 2015 and 2016 as well. That is too big a gamble for the money. If they cut him now, they clean up this years' cap and have no more cap charges in the future. They can sign 2 good players with money they save on Ware.

Man, we've got a boatload tied up in that secondary....

If Ware and Austin are designated June 1st cuts along wtih Carr's restructure, then the cowboys will be salary cap compliant on March 11th.

No, they will not.

June 1st designation do not offer immediate cap relief.

Restructuring Carr alone leaves you 15m OVER the cap.

Dallas will get under in March.
If they want to cut both Ware/Miles June 1st they will restructure Romo and everyone else to get legal first.

Really only one course of action to take here.

This makes so much sense it probably will not happen..

We really need a FAQ stickied here about using this tool.

The way to use the tool is simple.
Get UNDER the cap WITHOUT June 1st restructures. (Because the tool doesn't handle dates at all just total dollars).

Make any moves you want... such as tender Bailey at 2m, keep RFA guys, offer extensions et al...

THEN you make June 1st moves to free up further cap space.

When you follow the dates it becomes far more obvious.

Dallas will almost certainly release Miles June 2nd because he has lost his starting job and any further money down that drain is likely a waste.

Also the 5.5m he frees up just happens to be about perfect for signing rookies and keeping 3-4m in emergency cap cash. Any unused portion of which gets rolled over.

Dallas may be forced to release Ware if only option is taking a terrible contract forward but ideally they'd get his relief NOW not June 2nd.
And ideally it would be more than the 7.5M for cutting him before June 1st.

OR you can add a year to Ware's deal (hand him 8M right now. Plus 1M in base for 9 m of his 12.2 this year. for a smallish meet in the middle pay cut)
Guarantee 5m of next years deal but also lower that base to 5M. Add the 5th year at 12m base.. zero chance of ever seeing that of course.

Ware's cap his becomes 6.23 M for about 10M is savings March 11th.

You actually save 2.5m MORE than by simply cutting him.
And you have pushed off only 6.4M to future cap hits.

His 2015 cap hit becomes ~9.9M and he is set to be released in 2016.

I'm confused, if cap savings for June cuts are not realized until June, how will we be FA players when most top-flight free agents are usually signed.

I guess I am confused about this? What advantage is there to a designated June 1st cut?

It separates the team from a player.
So a player is not working out at that facility nor getting hurt and filing for additional compensation.

You could only name 2 of these per team per year but it 'may' have been altered to just 1.
I have read it both ways.

You are clearly not confused.
They will not be.
June 1st money may help with free agents who have fallen through cracks, with the rookie pool or with extensions but it really isn't much help in normal free agency which is handled in March and April.

Sorry but you two are forgetting the obvious fact that following this "plan" you are pushing 40m in dollars forward via other players.

It is hilarious to pretend getting rid of Ware's future money is a boon while ignoring you are creating as much if not more for players with just as short a shelf life in many cases.

In fact the only Hall of Fame caliber players we are discussing are Ware then possibly Witten.
We'd be extending mediocre players and pushing their money forward because we are in a hurry to cut a Hall of Fame caliber guy that was as recently as last TC dominating All-Pro Tyron Smith... silly indeed.

Incorrect. His deal was designed from day one to do this. It would be stupid not to.

Again, this should also be stickied.
Romo's money is guaranteed and he is 10000000% a restructure.
There is no other move at all there.

The only June 1st cut to make is Miles Austin. His cap hit is so large that cutting him prior to June eats up space rather than frees it.

All the restructures and other cuts need to happen before free agency begins in order to maximize our ability to sign free agents.

I'm not forgetting it all. They have to restructure Witten, Carr, Romo, Lee and Scandrick to do anything this offseason. I'm not as down on Carr and Witten as others and I think Lee, Scandrick and Romo are must keep guys.

I'm not in a hurry to cut Ware, but it is one of the best ways to make the team better now and in the future. I would rather trade him because I think he still has value left. It's just a cost vs production thing. They can almost replace him for a third of the salary cap hit and get another top player to boot. If you think he would take a major pay cut, then that is a better plan. I just don't think he would take a big enough cut to make a difference.
