wow, actually looking at his salary, though bad, it isnt as bad as I thought it was. I wonder if Jerry will have the same reaction.

Yessir. You catch on quickly TT-San.
I have a distinct feeling he's going to get restructured.

You heard it here first.
Maybe third...

I guess I am confused about this? What advantage is there to a designated June 1st cut?

In most situations, there is no advantage to the team when comparing a designated June 1st cut and an actual June 1st cut. There is a big advantage for the player.

In some situations, players have workout bonuses in their contract that the team could avoid by making them a designated June 1st cut.

It benefits the player by allowing him to hit free agency at the start of the off-season when clubs are spending money instead of having to wait to be released June 2nd when the market is shot.

There is no advantage to the team by using the June 1 designation, they still have to wait until June to realize the salary cap savings.

It's simply a courtesy to the player.

Only 2 players may be designated as such each league year.

Good point!

going to need more than 1.5 million for rookie after the draft

Actually, the number is almost exactly 1.5M. Only 51 contracts count against the cap in the off-season. The draft picks replace other players that are already counting against the cap. It is only the difference between the contracts of the draft picks and the existing players at the bottom of the top 51.

I went back and reviewed the cap hit for players drafted 16th in each round of the 2013 draft. When I put those players on the top 51 list, it only increased by about 1.5M.

You also have to increase their base salaries by 15K and remember the signing bonus prorations will count for every rookie on the off-season roster even if their salaries don't count against the top 51.

Dallas has 8 picks right now and will reportedly receive 4 compensatory picks in round 7 when those selections get announced at the spring meetings.

So the Cowboys are looking at 12 draft picks with 7 of them coming in the 7th round.

The cap hit for all rookies during the off-season should be under $1.8M.

The team has no choice but to be in compliance with the salary cap when the 2014 league year begins prior to 4:00pm on March 11th.

The NFL can fine a team in non-compliance and force them to make moves to get under the cap.

Getting under the cap and creating spending room isn't a problem, but it will involve restructuring several veteran contracts.

It allows the team to move on immediately without a potential distraction. Also the player isn't working out with team anymore and can't get hurt. If they get injured during team workouts between March and June 1st, the team is responsible for their salary for the year. You can't cut an injured player unless you work out a settlement.

no its not. Dallas is 31 mil over the cap not 20

Most figures I have seen have the Cowboys at 20m over the cap including the 11.8m in dead money. Where did you get that number from because Spotrac and Over the Cap report it differently? I have read that Murray is due a 600k bump and Church may possibly have some incentives that aren't included, but nothing close to another 10m.

I know thats my question. The OP says we will be plus 1.5 million after June 1st cuts and only carr restructure. Is that on June 1st or on March 11th1rh.

By doing what the OP stated we will still be 8.8 million over the cap on March 11th. The june 1st cap savings doesn't kick in until June 1st. Still going to have to restructure another player.

Right now Dallas is 20m over the cap.
They have to get under the cap by March 11th
The cuts the OP is talking about, Ware and Austin, wouldn't count until June 2nd
Only the Carr restructure would count.
They would have to do a bunch of other restructures(Witten, Romo, Lee, Scandrick) and a few cuts(Costa, Durant) to get under on March 11th and have any space to sign our own FAs and other FAs

The OP was thinking those moves would take immediate effect.

They wouldn't, Dallas wouldn't get any saving for Demarcus Ware and Miles Austin until June 2nd.

So the team would still be way over the cap March 11th when free agency starts at 4:00pm under his scenario.

-------

The Cowboys are going to restructure Tony Romo (create $10.036M), Brandon Carr (create $5.0775M or $5.416M), Jason Witten (create $3.03375M or $3.236M), Sean Lee (create $3.816M) and Orlando Scandrick (create $3.016M).

Demarcus Ware will either be restructured (create $8.54625M or $9.116M), asked to take a pay cut ($6M?) or be released immediately (create $6.93725M after adding a new salary to the top 51).

Carr, Witten and Ware all have 4 years remaining on their contracts, the team can add a 5th year in order to get maximum savings in 2014, that's why they have 2 different savings numbers. It isn't really necessary, but any room that's created and goes unused will be carried forward onto the 2015 cap, so there isn't any reason not to, either.

The team can restructure Mackenzy Bernadeau's contract by adding 3 years to it and reducing his salary to the minimum (create $1.616M).

Releasing Justin Durant and Phil Costa would create $1.76M in room after adding two first year minimum contracts to replace them.

because most place only calculate the salaries. and have a note somewhere under it showing the dead money like over the cap.
