5th Round of draft magic for Pete Carroll and Seahawks

My pet peeve with draft time is how we rue the fact that our frontoffice passed over guys who because stars yet so did 31 other teams (and Seattle, multiple times).

For every Sherman, I'll give you 30 Josh Thomas'.

Truth be told, we've actually done a pretty good job of drafting most years, it just doesn't translate into wins on the field due to coaching, injuries, acts of God, etc.

They did wiff on Percy Harvin...

Percy is from my home town.. Went to high school with my daughter.. But he's a a off injured..Concused... Migraned WR... They gave up a 1st, 3rd and 7th.. then signed him for 6yr\67 mil... Thats a Jerry move...

It its luck for the SEahawks, then we are the most unlucky drafting team of all time. Just look at our failed 4th rounders, Skyler Green, Isaiah Stanback, Brewster, Arkin, Hodge, AOA, Johnson, Webb.

I wouldn't say its being unlucky, I think its outsmarting themselves into believing they are smarter than the rest of the league. I would hope that they have learned their lesson, but I doubt it.

Earl Thomas is a big part of why that secondary is so great. Wish we had the shot to get him
To get to 14 they would have lost out on both Dez and Lee plus.

In the fourth round out of Saganaw Community College...

It is really impressive. Plus you look at the smart FA signings and trades they have made. I have read the Seahawks board looks much different than most teams. They know the type of players they are looking for and are not shy to take that players at a spot where some teams may have them ranked later. It must be nice to have a Front office who knows the type of players they are looking for.

The Broncos are also a good example....especially in FA. Cromartie, a guard from the Chargers, and Knighton were all relatively small FA pickups. I am sure there are more. It just shows you when you have a smart front office, you can fill spots without breaking the bank (ex 50 million for a corner)

In fairness the Seahawks 4th round looks like crap compared to it's 5th.
At that point in the draft you are going to pick more busts than future stars.

Sherman is a top 20 5th rounder of all time.
That's a combination of luck and insight.
He was a Pac 10 guy and LA HD kid who was drafted by a Coach that had just left a major LA powerhouse college.

I really like BW Webb our 4th this past draft.
He is a Scandrick successor and nickel CB.
They need to teach him a lot still as you'd expect from a kid at that level of football but he can cover folks.

2010......Cam Chancellor

2011......Richard Sherman (34th CB selected)

A little good fortune like that, and our D would be greatly improved, while spending higher picks up front.

Pete Carrol, with secondary and defense background, has done a fantastic job in Seattle, but a little bit of luck in the late rounds makes a huge difference for a team.

BTW....Orlando Scandrick, best CB for Cowboys in 2013.....5th round pick.

Like I said in another thread.
In the draft- the shooter can hit it's target without aiming.
Doesn't mean the bullet didn't stray, it just still hit the right target.

A good scouting staff and strong GM'ing helps the odds, but the Cowboys don't have that, in my humble opinion.
Let's hope for some more stray bullets hitting the target!

No offense CJK, but the Broncos spent all that money on Manning or the rest of their FA would be meaningless.

Once you are considered an elite team you can get a discount FA or two to head on down.
Those playoff checks help the bank account a lot.

It is the same story ever year. People pour time and effort into studying teams that won this year....
The same front office and staff may be 5-11 in a couple years and scratching their head wondering what went wrong.
To some extent that is just football.

Bruce Irvin was a terrible pick. It was roundly criticized at the time, and the critics were right.

Wagner and Wilson have performed at their expected level based on their actual and projected draft position.

Can't argue with most of your post, but I think Russell Wilson has significantly outperformed the draft status as a 3rd round pick at his position.

I wouldn't spend more than a 3rd on a bus driver.

I wanted Cam Chancellor badly late in that draft. We took AOA instead. oops

Can't say I knew enough about Sherman back then.

What is underestimated about Wilson is how magical it is to get even mediocre starting QB play from a 3rd rounder making peanuts.

Such a ridiculous advantage to be saving 15m a year in cap hits.

He does what it takes to win. He doesn't care about stats. I wouldn't call him a bus driver necessarily. I don't think Seattle has asked him to go out there and try to throw the ball a bunch. Baldwin and Tate are nothing more than average receivers and I can't even tell you who their TE is. It's not like Wilson has awesome receiving weapons out there.

I'm sure if the Seahawks had Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice healthy, Wilson would have better passing numbers. And that bigger pass threat would open up lanes for Marshawn Lynch even more.

This team would be even more of a terror than they already are had their top 2 receivers stayed healthy all year.

As long as that talent doesn't come along with Richard Sherman's egregious
character.

Really? Do you know what he was doing Monday besides dealing with all the crap, he was handing out blankets that he provide for homeless and needy, the guy does more in the community then 50% of the Cowboys and he is still on a rookie contract. I am a huge Cowboys fan but dude is one of those players that I would love to be on the Cowboys roster. So what he talks, no more then Irvin did back in the day
