2010......Cam Chancellor

2011......Richard Sherman (34th CB selected)

A little good fortune like that, and our D would be greatly improved, while spending higher picks up front.

Pete Carrol, with secondary and defense background, has done a fantastic job in Seattle, but a little bit of luck in the late rounds makes a huge difference for a team.

BTW....Orlando Scandrick, best CB for Cowboys in 2013.....5th round pick.

Is this considered a strong Safety class? Initially I thought S in FA but with Ware/Austin (cut both) being uncertain not going to hedge on that. Would love this team to actually invest in the position and correct the miscues that have become embarrassingly common the last several seasons.

As long as that talent doesn't come along with Richard Sherman's egregious
character.

I don't think its luck. They also got Maxwell in the 6th round in 2011.

How about them picking up Avril and Bennet in the offseason? For what we paid Spencer, we could have almost had both of these guys. One of them is making 5 million this year and the other 6.5m. Moves like that and smart drafting is what has helped make Seattle such a good team.

You are correct. Both of those two have been impact players in these playoffs as well. Amazing.

Earl Thomas is a big part of why that secondary is so great. Wish we had the shot to get him

Idk if we would of been able to sign both. Jerry would of signed them both for more than they got signed for by Seattle.

This was "the" move in the last offseason, just think they got 2 productive pass rushers and we got 0, that would've made a big difference. I think we were operating out of fear, fear of letting Spencer get away when we should have been patient and seen what the market was like. lesson? Don't let fear of the unknown drive your operation.

I am a firm believer that draft is not luck on most levels (injury maybe).
It's about scouting properly and knowing what kind of players and personalities fit what you are trying to build.

The success rate of late rounders across all teams and staffs sort of disproves this. If it were NOT luck, then there would be a staff somewhere that consistently finds players in the late rounds for years and years. What usually happens is that they do it for a couple of years, make a run, everyone notices it but then it doesn't sustain. Pats in the early 2000s, Ravens did it for a while, etc. But over time, ALL those teams have their warts too.

True. But there was also a little luck for them as well.

In any normal year where teams spend on FAs, no way either would have been available for the amount of money Seattle got them for.

Bennett, in particular, was due for a big payday, and if it had've been a year earlier, somebody would have paid him in the 40s.
