5th Round of draft magic for Pete Carroll and Seahawks

Yes, I stand corrected. I was thinking of another situation at the time of posting that. Thanks for pointing that out.

No worries. Flynn was supposed to be the starter but Wilson beat him out and then they sent Flynn packing. Nothing like a healthy QB competition.

Funny how some teams get 'lucky' so many more times than the Cowboys over the last 15 years. Coincidence? Hardly.

Exactly.

Luck favors the prepared. And the Seahawks were/are more prepared than the Cowboys.

I don't think its luck. They also got Maxwell in the 6th round in 2011.

I'll give you another one, Luke Wilson. He is a fifth round pick they really like.

sweezy is a starter they took in the 7th

Kj wright in the 4th, maxwell 6th, Thurmond 4th, Chancellor 5th, Wilson 3rd, Bryant 4th. Etc.........

Doesn't Seattle also lead the league in suspensions from PEDs and drugs the past several years? My gut feeling tells me that Seattle probably has the most players using PEDs in the NFL. Just a hunch.

Every team and most players use PED'S

Luck is a factor, but Seattle knew exactly what kinds of players they were looking for. They followed a blueprint to match a specific defensive identity. Tall, physical players who made up for a lack of speed with toughness. Lack of speed causes good players to fall on draft day all the time.

Of course if you know you're not going to be fast, then you must be dedicated to a strong and deep front seven. Not spending 1st and 2nd round picks on a single half-injured CB and 50 million on the other one certainly helps free up resources to do that.

Oh, really? I guess our players need to use more PEDs then.:)

Just kidding. I also believe a large percentage of players are using 'something' to gain an advantage. However, what accounts for Seattle players not being able to beat the system as well as other teams'players? Bad luck? Maybe Seattle is using all its luck up in the draft and doesn't have any more luck when it comes to testing.

I know Seattle had that adderall problem. As a college student I have partaken in the use of adderall. I'm not going to lie...it helped on school work. But I cant really see how it would help so much when playing football as it is such a fast paced game. I think it moves to fast to even remotely slow it down. Just saying...

I think that's the case in most drafts. Players get drafted higher or lower based on less teams scouting, negatives in certain areas, lack of something, multiple reasons….. But you coach up players based on the strengths that fit your system, or sometimes other teams just miss and you hit..

Take a team like the steelers, they have drafted well for 25 years now. I admire how they continue to replenish talent through the draft.
The eagles is another team that had a stretch of sustainability through the draft. (mind you I loathe the steelers and eagles…steelers a bit more)
The draft is not an unproven commodity. Does it take some luck, and other teams not being as good at it as you? Sure, but if you are prepared and have scouts that see the emmanual sanders type players that are in your back yard, you will sustain your talent base.

Tough to argue any of that.

In my opinion, the reason the Cowboys struggle at times in the draft is because they lack an identity. Really. Who are the Dallas Cowboys? Are they a power running team? Nope. Dynamic passing team? I wouldn't say so. How about a smothering defensive team? Not by a long shot. Until the Cowboys decide who they actually are or want to be, they will be a team that simply tries to assemble talent and hope that they can't incorporate that talent into their football team.

The Seahawks or 9ers, on the other hand, know that they want to be defensive juggernauts with solid running games. Their entire draft and FA policy revolves around that philosophy. They target a specific type of player with a specific type of skill sets. They are able to identify those players both early and late in the draft and coach them into a better version of that current player.

The Cowboys seem to lack that type of focus, IMHO.

All of this my friend we agree on…
And I'm sure we agree on the steelers and eagles also…. pure hate:D

I have to agree with Ron, Hoof and perry- this is a good post and a very astute observation.
