Quit crying Hos...you are too good of a poster, fan and guy to go down this road. I am in the majority you described: liked not overpaying for vets like Peppers, Allen and Ware. I didn't even want to sign Melton until I saw how cap friendly it was. I want to strip it ALL down and go young. That still stands. Who CARES what the BSPN 'Insiders' give us for a free agent grade? I consider a 'D' from those clowns a compliment honestly. We need to rebuild this team once and for ALL. Go young, draft well and get back to the way we built teams in the early 90's. It's possible JJ has seen the error of his ways the last 17 years. Fingers crossed, but so far so good this off season.
I don't care about their grade. Just saying the way to get a good grade is to spend a lot. Everyone oohs and goshes until the games get played.

Too bad the old smiley of the dog peeing on the ESPN logo is not around anymore. I am sure it would have been used a dozen times in this thread.

Why, do writeups like Dez rules deserve credit?

Want a good grade? Spend a lot. You see it every year. The Eagles were a dream team. The Commanders win the off season Championship almost every year.

Save cap room and not sign big contracts? No soup for you.

The funny thing is, a lot of posters here applauded not paying the prices for Peppers and Allen, or for Ware. They laughed and said the Commanders paid too much for Hatcher. The exact same posters will be in this thread saying we goofed and this article is a foundation.

Everything we do is wrong. Every single time.

I see ESPN as business first. One that just so happens to deal with sports. They know full well that Controversy Creates Cash. And that's how they and anyone they hire operate.

When TO did his sit-ups in the driveway, it changed the way sports is covered.
Fantasy Football changed that (players over team) but agree that TO was one of the pioneers to this transformation within sports media coverage. (Deion/Namath) Love Madden to death, but he didn't help with continued fawning over a specific player ;) regardless of what was going on in the game. In an ironic way, he glamorized/commercialized OL play in the media sense via our 90's Dallas Oline and Larry Allen later on in his career.

who grades the ESPN writers? the next good, insightful article that i read by an espn writer would be the first.

ESPN Dallas deserves an F for continuing to employ Calvin Watkins. he is HORRIBLE.

I like the moves we have made but lets be honest... Those moves made our team worse short term.

Last year was our chance to do something. This next season is pretty much a waste and about the only good that can come out of it is if we develop some young talent and get rid of Garrett.

The grades are meaningless in reality but they are based on what the teams have done so far. Saying the Cowboys get an "incomplete" is a lazy excuse and could be said for every team. As far as what we have done so far, we deserve a low grade. We ran out and signed two journeymen on the second day of free agency. We signed a third one really but then changed our minds. We also signed a third-string quarterback who isn't exactly young despite being drafted just 2 years ago. These are horrible moves but with a team who has so many holes and keeps missing the playoffs, they hardly qualify as difference makers. It has nothing to do with who spends the most money. It's all about whether or not you have used the off-season, up until this point, to better your team. Melton, a very good signing IMO, does accomplish that some but if you factor in the release of DeMarcus Ware, it's not quite a wash.

We will use the draft to address some of those many holes. Guess what? Every team gets to draft. We have hardly proven ourselves as accomplished draft gurus, with way more misses than hits, despite whatever rainbow polish certain posters will run in with their overwhelming need to defend every move this team makes.

Did this team use free agency to improve from last year's team? Not really. Is Jeremy Mincey, Terrell McClain, Brandon Weeden, and Henry Melton minus DeMarcus Ware, Jason Hatcher, and Miles Austin make this team better than 8-8? Not on paper and that's what these grades are based on. The grade seems both accurate and fair.
Bingo.

If it's so incomprehensible that the media would try to give offseason grades before the offseason is over, think of it as any class you take in school. In most classes, you get grades as you progress. The teacher is usually going to give you tests, on which you get graded, which give you an idea of how you're progressing to your final grade. If you fail a test, you better step it up or you're in jeopardy of failing. Does it necessarily mean you will fail? No, it just means you have work to do.

There are two primary ways a team augments its personnel in the offseason -- free agency and draft. Free agency is not over, but it's close. It's not unreasonable to grade a team's free agency success at this point. And of course, a good grade now doesn't mean you will be successful, as the season is it's own set of grades.

It's not about just spend more, you get a good grade. The Buccaneers got an A in that article, and I wouldn't say they "spent a lot." They've made some pretty shrewd moves without spending tons of money and cut one of their best defenders in Revis.

No. I wouldn't expect anyone to get 20 sacks in a season but there's a good chance Ware will get more sacks next year than Jeremy Mincey gets in his Cowboys career.

I'm not sure if you heard but Mincey isn't projected to be the starter. Just throwing it out there, since you mentioned this a redundant 200x in the last two weeks.

Definitely worse short term. Whether this is the start to more fiscal sanity down the road remains to be seen. To me, this is just cap hell. Even if Jerry and his chubby son don't want to admit it.

The moves are proof of what you say is unseen......what are you talking about?

Or are you just trying to get likes from a certain type of crowd?

Too early to grade anything. Wait until the draft passes and the second wave of FA's become available to pass a grade.

Insiders not high on Cowboys' work so far

of what the Dallas Cowboys have -- or have not -- done in free agency so far this offseason, giving them a D grade.

The only team with a worse grade is the Oakland Raiders, who earned an F.

I haven't been more excited for the future of this team in a while. I actually feel good about Red and Jerry. Hard decisions were made for the better. Let's get young on D and get hungry and tough. Ware was declining due to injuries. Hatcher is to old to pay big money. Draft well this year and have cap room and draft next year. We will be ready.

A+ grade
