Explain this to me....why bring Orton back?

Can't we save 3-4 million if we cut Orton?

At this stage of this franchise if Romo gets hurt then I rather this team suck and get a top pick next yr than to be average (already there) to below average and getting a 10-20 pick again.

Keep Weedon and pick a QB in the draft to develop. If Romo goes down then fine....rebuild with a high draft pick. Stop kidding ourselves with Orton will step in and save the season bullcrap!
 
If we draft a QB he will probably be waived as it clears cap room. If we do not, he is better insurance than Weeden. For now, it is simply a smart business move to keep him. That can still change.

Because pretty obviously, the powers that be wouldn't "rather this team suck".
 
Then why bring any veteran backups back? If a starter goes down. Might as well cut all the vet backups and just play rookies.

The only reason I can see keeping Orton for now is so we have live arms in training camp to give Romo more recovery time and save his arm for season.

I'm not a cap person so I don't not implications of when to cut Orton. If we cut Orton after training camp but before regular-season then I think we can save his salary to extend Dez and Tyron.

Jerry needs to wake up. We all know if Romo goes down this team is done. Stop lying to yourself Jerry!
 
Romo's sustained health after coming back from his back trouble is anything but guaranteed. Orton is our best alternative. It's a simple matter of retaining your best options for success. Saving a few mil by cutting Orton certainly wouldn't guarantee anything.

The key words there are "I can see." The team obviously does not agree with what you see. Not sure why that's so hard for all of us as fans to accept sometimes, but it afflicts us all from time to time.

If we lose Romo, who is best suited to replace him and give us a chance to win, Orton or Weeden? Therein lies your answer.

However, as I said, if they pull the trigger on a QB in the mid rounds (3-5), and I do think they will, then there is no reason to keep Orton around even though he still might be the best option to replace Romo. But they can't risk losing the draft pick and Weeden's cap hit is so minimal it makes way more sense to keep him than it would to keep Orton.

Basically, what I am saying is what is your rush to cut him? We already have cap room. They simply want to have all bases covered before they do it. I expect him to be cut as soon as we do draft a QB to groom.
 
Just last year, as bad as the team was, and the division, yada, yada, yada; they were one game out from the postseason with the starting QB injured. That's why you keep a capable back-up.
 
I think he's already been paid.

Orton is scheduled to make a base salary of $3.25 million in 2014 and has a cap number of $4.377 million. If Orton retires, he would need to pay the Cowboys at least $3 million.

If this article is accurate it doesn't seem like they could release him and ask for a refund too and there's no option good enough to justify eating the money.

With this schedule of opponents we'll be hard pressed to get to .500 in 2014. Weeden is an experienced backup that costs a lot less than Orton, you keep an Orton if you're the Saints or Denver but not the 2014 Cowboys.
