If this Draft Grades out an A across the drafting table, people... especially fans, will be seeing a different shade...Scott McClay brings that possibility to light.

They have that option all the way up until the 1st game of the season. Cutting him then saves the same amount as cutting him now.

Teams look at the situation where the starting QB goes out for a game or two, not the "what if" in terms of the starter being out all season.

That's what I was looking for.
Keep him as looksy until last game of pre season. If Romo is fine then we go with Romo, Weedon and hopefully a decent draft pick. We can use extra cap space to start working on extending Tyron and Dez.

This team doesn't have that type of margin for Romo to be out a few games. Rest of this team with this head coach just doesn't have that luxury.

About tanking....ask how it worked out for Indy. I'm not suggesting that we do with Romo. But if the season is gone...what the heck. Might as well play the young players and find out what they got. This is not unheard of.

Meh. No reason to get rid of him, no reason compelling enough to get rid of him. If someone offers us a 5th rounder they could have him + one (or two) of our 7ths. He could legitimately compete to start for about half a dozen teams next year.

I'd rather trade a 7th for Terrelle Pryor. That kid with good coaching could be better than Vick in his prime.

Some keep bringing up the if Romo goes down scenario. IF he does go down, whos to say its for the whole season? It is possible for guys to go down be out for a few weeks and come back. After Romo Orton gives this team the best chance to win right now, bottom line. If Romo goes down in week 3 with a four week injury the quality of your backup QB could be the difference in making the post season or not. The idea of tanking for a better draft pick is ridiculous, and would be embarrassing to the team and the league.

I totally agree. Let's take it one step further. Picture a situation where Romo gets injured in the first quarter of a game. Nothing serious, he should return the following week, but he can't make it back in to this game. Do any of you honestly think we have a better chance to win that week if Weeden comes in to finish the game instead of Orton? I'll take Orton every time.

Yes, if Romo is out for an extended time, then they might as well tank the season, get a top 10 pick and draft a QB. We hear a lot about guys like Tom Brady being a 6th round pick, but the majority of quality NFL QBs over the years have been top 10 picks.

Interesting. He was a 3rd round pick in 2011. I wonder what the asking price is. We don't get Oakland games here so I have not seen him since his Ohio St days. Is he a backup candidate that is close ot Orton's talent level and cheaper than Orton?

Why cut Orton, why not trade him? I was listening to Sirrius NFL, and they seem to think that the signing of Weeden indicates that Orton will be offered for trade around draft time. He has a managable salary for a top tier backup, and teams who think they are close, and are lacking a legitimate backup QB will be willing tot rade for him. Chicago was mentioned, as was NE, if they trade Mallet.

I think it would be best to take something for him and not just cut him lose.

I really like Pryor, but he doesn't fit our system. You would almost have to create a separate playbook if Romo gets hurt.

I don't. But I know when to make chicken salad out of chick sh**. I am just being realistic about winning and how to retool this team instead of keeping an unrealistic expectation and outlook like JJ.

If we draft a QB he will probably be waived as it clears cap room. If we do not, he is better insurance than Weeden. For now, it is simply a smart business move to keep him. That can still change.

Very well said indeed sir.

Not sure realistic is the word I would use. This team won 8 games a year ago, and you want them to start tanking in April. I think dramatic is a better word to describe this thread. You think Weeden is a better qb at this point? I'd work with that. You want to draft a qb and cut Orton? I could work with that. When you're logic is cut him for a better draft pick... that's sad.
