NFL.COM Charles Davis mock draft 5 4/21

Idk why but that's who I want, I just get the feeling he's gonna be a cowboy.

He, or Donald and a round 2 DE would be my preference, too. He's a good player, and I have a hard time seeing who's going to make him a priority in front of us. There are teams who could use him, of course, but I think all of those have better fits on the board at that point, too. Unless somebody hops us for him, I think he's probably there at 16.

I have Donald 1A and Barr 1B as far as who might be in our range and who I like. I like Donald a little more because Barr has a high ceiling but you are still asking a guy to go from a RB to LB to DE in three or so years and it might take him a little longer to get it all down.

I like Donald slightly better, too, actually, but mostly from an ability to play now standpoint. DE is the bigger position of need, and you have to love Barr's upside in a year or two. Basically, taking him first lets me relax the rest of the draft instead of grip until I see if a DE I like is there in the second or, gulp, the third. If we get the best DE prospect on our board there at 16, we should consider ourselves very lucky.

Why are the lions taking Donald? A lot In this draft doesn't make sense.

That's weird. I hadn't heard they'd passed on Fairley's option. And there's rumors they're dangling Suh rather than extending him, right?

I had that as well. New regime this year, maybe they want to start cleaning up there image.

Pretty much how I feel about it too.

Donald will be plug and play, IMO. Barr will take a while to adjust.

I like Barr a good bit, honestly. I just like Donald so much and the 3-tech spot is so vital in Marinelli's scheme that Barr suffers in comparison. A good edge rusher is important to Marinelli too though, so I wouldn't be too upset with Barr if Rod thinks he is a good fit.

Here is the rub for me though... If you take Donald at 16 (or in a slight trade up to around 11) then there is Crichton in round 2 that I really like a whole lot. However, if you take Barr at 16, there honestly isn't going to be a DT in the 2nd that I like very much. If you could come out of the first two rounds with Donald and Crichton, then the DL would be greatly improved.

Basically, if we take Barr at 16, then I think the earliest we get a DT would be the 3rd... and that is too late IMO. Maybe the Cowboys like someone that I don't at DT though.

Dallas is drafting well enough now that I trust them to get the right guys, but I just think moving up a few spots to ensure Donald is the right thing to do.

They're in a tough spot there at DT. I'd think twice about extending Suh, too. And would probably have passed on Fairley's option. Suh's an interesting player to figure out what to do with. He can go full-Hanesworth on you, or he could be the kind of value VFA you can build your line around if you're a team like New England or, now, San Francisco with a tolerance for risk and some picks to work with. The hard part is figuring out what to do on the contract.

If you get Barr in the first you don't have to take a 3 tech DT in the second. You could wait till the third or later and probably still get some one like Sutton (who I think you don't like) but even if for some reason You get a different 3 tech who is not as good as Donald you still have Melton at the spot. The melton signing helped out a good deal IMO you still need DTs and DEs but at the very least it might give you the option if you miss out on Donald.

For that reason and the possible up ceiling of Barr at DE is the reason I would be ok with the Barr pick even if I like donald a little more.

I think you have a better chance of getting a good 3 and 1 tech DT later in the draft than you do a good pass rushing DE.

It does not immediately come across as a need but Suh wants big money and Fairley is also on his way out supposedly. Might be more of a need for them than they let on, since they are also looking hard at Sutton.

All of those are good points too.

I just think that with a little moving around, it wouldn't be difficult to come out of the first couple of rounds with exactly what you want. In the 2010 draft, the Cowboys were fresh off of losing a few players right before their pick (Max Unger was one) in 2009, so they were proactive in getting their players that year. They jumped up in front of Baltimore to get Dez (pissing off the Ravens I heard) and they also moved up a few spots to get Sean Lee in the second. The picks we lost for those guys are long forgotten and we have two players who are vital to the team.

With just a little work this year Dallas could move up a little and get Donald and then move up to make sure they got Crichton (assuming they like him as much as I think they do). Or Donald and Ryan Shazier if he falls a little into the 2nd.

I just want them to be proactive like Jimmy Johnson was when he liked a guy. Just make it happen and put together the team that you want... not whoever just so happens to drop to your pick.

JMO of course.

The problem with moving up is that you give up a 3rd in a deep draft to do so...too expensive

It won't necessarily be a 3rd, and even that IMO isn't too expensive. The Cowboys will probably agree with you though, and not me.

Given the option of Donald and Barr, I lean to Donald based on production, experience and fit for our defense.

Its easy to get caught up thinking about who is available later in the draft, but also misleading. You should take the best guy at the pick you have and let the draft unfold as it wants. I don't think we should think of the draft as a grand scheme to get every hole filled. But rather, each pick as a chance to get the best guy that will make the team better. So even if we take Barr, we may not be able to get a good 3t for the rest if the draft, but that's OK by me because we've still improved the team.

Lion's aren't taking Donald. They need WRs and Secondary help like nobodies business. Unless they are trading Suh, this aint happening.

Would you trade #16 for Suh?

If he was under contract for 4 years at the same price at the player that will be drafted at #16, then yes; however, giving up a pick and a huge chunk of cap space to give him a new contract would be a terrible idea.

If he were available, I would seriously have to consider figuring out a way to do it. There is not one player in this draft, IMO, that is as good as he is defensively and that includes Clowney IMO. Of course, it is just my opinion.
