Well, that's what you get when you're an 8-8 team, especially one that tends to be in a lot of close games. Part of the fan base is going to think we're close to getting over that hump, and the other part is going to think we're nowhere close.

We've done a lot of clearing out of the roster over the last few years now, so any fan's stance should be closely linked to their opinion of all the youngsters now on our team.

Now, me, I'm probably more on the optimistic side. But, I try to have no illusions about where we are. When 2014 kicks off I'll gave the highest of hopes, but tempered expectations.
 
It would be nice if a transcript of Stephen Jones' comments were available. As far as the draft is concerned, Jon Machota was able to somewhat relay Stephen/the team's public comments of:
  • coveting a defensive lineman with 1-tech and 3-tech flexibility
  • allowing the big board to dictate the selection if the player is "high enough", which is open to various interpretation
  • evaluating whether safety candidates are worthy of a first-round selection, with dominating ability being a prerequisite for staying pat or trading up
  • being notably ambiguous about Johnny Manziel
  • labeling Timmy Jernigan as a "great football player"
It's probably worth less than nothing, but it's interesting how Stephen slightly isolated Jernigan from the rest of the commentary. Makes one wonder how the big board is being constructed and where Jernigan is, has been, and will be situated come draft time.

I hear yea. My pet cats are Donald, Dix, Pryor, and JF.
 
I think he was referring to if Dix fell to us we would take him. I like Pryor, but I don't think he is as sure of a player as Dix.

I'm happy the team isn't interested in Jernigan. I think 1 tech's would only be worthy selections in 3-4 D's and understandably the team wants some athleticism with that pick. Yeah, the team doesn't seem into World, and they shouldn't @ this point (Romo contract = tied to him for two seasons)

And that's just it. Lots of question marks. And whatever the answers to those question marks end up being is what's going to affect our 2014 season the most.

Will these young bucks turn the corner? That is thee most important question. Followed closely by- can our starters stay healthy?

We'll see.

I think they are both very solid. I wouldn't complain if we took either one of them. Been a long time since we have had a safety as good as either of these guys. We could use a hard hitting general back there.

I'm not sure team interest in Jernigan can be ruled out completely based on Machota's blurbs.

Both Carter and Claiborne have had 2 years and Carter looks to be regressing if anything. Claiborne looks to be holding steady at average to below average. After the last 4 years 6-10, 8-8,8-8, and 8-8 in an extremely weak division.. I'm not feeling real great about this upcoming year.
 
I've already decided we are taking Donald at 16 so we are concentrating on 47 from now on.

I just hope we don't trade up in the first... And we take the BPA.. Even it is a QB or WR..

Seattle was the one truly dominant team. You can't minimize what they've accomplished. Amazing defense and can rack up points. They won for a reason, it wasn't a fluke. Neither Brees or Peyton could do anything against that defense. Come on man, Seattle has a good shot at repeating. They're that good, and young and have depth. Combine that with good coaching and leadership. Dallas is nowhere close to competing with that. Dallas finds ways to lose games. Fix the pass rush, another problem will then arise. Kinda like how Dallas fixed the oline and everybody thought our problems were solved and then the entire defense went to ****. By the time Dallas fixes the defensive front seven, romo will be finished and DM past his prime.
Dallas is several years away from being considered legit contenders. Sorry if that kills the optimistic vibe. But that's how I feel about the situation in Dallas. The problems go deeper than just lack of pass rush.
 
IDk enough about this Jernigan. Can he only play 1-tech? Does he not have any ability to rush the passer? I think we need a 1-tech if Crawford can't play that role.
 
Donald, Dix, Pryor, Martin, Manziel (highly doubtful), Dee Ford, are the guys I hope we are targeting. One of them is going to be there for the taking. I will bet on it. Manziel won't make it out of the top 10. Donald probably won't either. I would love Donald. May 8th can't get here soon enough.

You bet the problems go deeper than the pass rush.

Last season Seattle was only 8th in sacks.

But were 1st in yards per attempt given up.

Seattle won because of their pass defense and then because of their pass rush... And not the other way around.
