Jerry Jones: I was so close to drafting Johnny Manziel

Does anything we say in here bring about substantive change?

Not at all. We throw rocks at Jerry, everyday, every year. He hasn't went anywhere though, and will not.

We threw rocks at Wade Philips, Roy Williams, Alan Ball, Danny McCray, Bradie James, Terence Newman, ect....

They all eventually left, we got we wanted. God forbid, the only way we get what we want out of Jerry is if he passes away. Again, God forbid.

See, why can't he just have a philosophical belief that he will make the right moves necessary?? You want a guy, who would think almost like you. No in reality, it's just a clone version of you, with maybe just a little more knowledge of the Fronts.

So in reality you would Jerry Jones. lol

Overall i do hear what you are saying, but as you stated, it would be hard for you to not have things go your way or in a direction you want the team to be built.

Obviously I would hire a guy I believe in. Way to expose me on that.

But then I'd get out of the way and let him do his job.

Nothing like Jerry Jones.

"lol".

The GM I would hire would have the philosophical belief that games are won and lost in the trenches. I'd make sure of that before I'd ever hire the guy.

After that, its his ship. I won't think for my General Manager. But I will hold him accountable for the results.

This stuff really isn't hard if you don't have an ego bigger than the state of Texas.

So you would basically hire a guy, with the same interest as you. Only difference from Jerry is, when things go south, you can have a fall guy. Even though he thinks like you, but just to please the fans, you would point the finger at him, and fire him.

"lol"

Whenever this topic comes up, I think back to what Tony Romo had to say after the draft when asked how interested he was in the first round selection. He said point-blank that he had information the rest of us probably didn't, so he wasn't wrapped up in whether or not we'd take the QB. Since I can't imagine Tony lying about this, I have to conclude Jerry's just using a cheap way of keeping the Cowboys' name in the news and that he wasn't actually serious in any way about drafting Manziel. And it apparently works, since this will be post #145 on the topic here.

Unless Jerry wasn't consulting Romo about it. Either way I don't understand what good it does to talk about it now. It sure can't make Tony feel any better.

Trash talk.

He would get someone that knows football, give him 4-5 years then if it works give him an extension. That's not operating like Jerry Jones the control freak. Hiring someone with the same philosophical outlook does not mean they are going to be competent in the details to execute it....JJ won't let his coaches execute the details, so they fail.

Wow. We got a live one on our hands here.

Yes. If you take away all the personnel control and the day to day decision making, I would be just like Jerry.

Whatever makes you feel better.

It would be the exact opposite of Jerry. It would be what the sane owners in the league do.

Just stop it, reality is you wouldn't know what to do. There is a reason you are sitting at home or work from the computer or on the cell phone, commenting on a message board.

You may be able to body a few people in an argument or debate within this here forum, but don't get beside yourself and think you are some guru, who could take over the cowboys today, and we would see instant transformation.

"Oh I would just hire a qualified GM, who "I" feel is qualified" Yeah ok, so simple. You would know exactly who is qualified huh?

If i remember correctly, Jerry has been the same way since the 90's. He won 3 super bowls. Even after Jimmy left.

Or was that some other guy who owned the team?

Oh, he wouldn't give him 5 years, and if he did, and we were failing, you know what his brothers on this message board would be saying? "Stupid Risen, he hired this idiot GM, who knows nothing, both of of them are clowns, running a circus within this organization"

"Did Risen hire his brother or something? How could he hire someone who knows nothing, and I thought Jerry was bad"

If Jerry is such a football genius, explain the last 18 years - you can't. Jerry got lucky finding Jimmy and did not have enough sense to hang on to the goose that laid three golden eggs. Genius such as hiring assistant coaches before hiring the HC and continuing to change the HC's coaching staff. Not to mention players know the buck does not stop at the HC's office.

Flaming at Risen, me and others we would emulate Jerry is a troller's admission Jerry is a clueless control freak. Speaking for myself, I'd gather proven experts as consultants, sift thru their recommendations and like Murchinson, stick to a plan for five years (actually he gave Landry a ten year extension.) My 1st big decision would be whether or not to clean house immediately or after the 2014 season.

Yes, I would know what to do and told you what I'd do.

You would see immediate improvement in the Cowboys if I took over simply because it would mean the position of General Manager would be a legit one again in Dallas. Filled by a personnel guru who will only hold on to the gig through results and not bloodlines.

Any fan who would also hire a real GM would also immediately improve this team. I don't have a trademark on this. If you're sane and rational, you'd be a better owner than Jerry Jones.

Yes. I know who some of the very qualified candidates are, I'll take Eric DeCosta from the Ravens, but it wouldn't matter. That's where the accountability comes in. You won't be stuck with a horrible GM till death do you part.

Nor will you have to read complete nonsense from fans desperately trying to excuse the cancer that killed this team.

The kettle calling the pot black.

All you do is stalk Jerry threads and moan and groan. Get over it, he's not going anywhere. I know it pains you to see him actually take steps to improve the o-line because it just gives one less big thing to complain about.

Now all you can say is "he ruined this team".

Stop pretending that you or any fan could just wake up and run the cowboys. Madden messed up your head, I know you probably been watching the cowboys for years, yes you love the game. Just stop fooling yourself into thinking you could do a better job. If that's the case, go run a team right now. Lets see how you do. Stop running your mouth 24/7 on the internet about a billionaire, who does not know you.

I know you will say "isn't this what this site is for?" Yeah cast your opinion, but all you do is stalk anything jerry related. You can't help yourself, you see a jerry thread, its almost a given risen will make his guest appearance.

You say I defend him, I comment on him once in a blue moon. You stalk him, every thread.

All 28k posts? And he has ten times as many likes as you @ 5k...must be lots of other members here you hold in contempt for agreeing with Risen.

But that's too rational. You worship a GM that's .500 since 97, won three less SBs than the Pats - two less than the Pack, Ravens, Broncos, Steelers, Giants. Might as well wish we become more like the Browns

Yeah, I don't post as much, and who are you his spokesperson? "Oh risen has 28k posts, and more likes"

Ok? Did not know this was a popularity contest. I don't worship a GM, i just choose not to bang my head up against the wall over every thing he says or does. Unlike the players, he can't be released.

I know you are Risen's protege, and want to be just like him. All you have to do is message him, if you want his attention that bad.

No need to big him up, and post his "Internet Stats". To get his approval. I already stated he does a good job going back n forth with the fans on here, still does not make him a qualified eye, on who to pick up as a GM.

I might be insane, but I'm fairly certain that his rambling incoherent responses to questions are getting worse as the years go by. I absolutely do not think he's trying to "play" the media into talking about the Cowboys. They were at Cowboys camp and asked to interview him and of course they were going to ask about Manziel. He proceeds to open his mouth and ramble his way to a nonsensical answer that directly contradicts what he's said in the past.

If the "play" he was going for was looking like a confused old man, then sure, I guess he succeeded. Anything more than that is giving him way too much credit at this point.

I'm convinced a certain poster here is Spalding Jones. No one can possibly defend someone so inept at his job (GM) to this extent and get so bludgeoned in the process. It's like watching a car wreck you know is coming, you just can't turn away even though you should to avoid the gore that's sure to follow.
