I can't give any specifics for obvious reasons, but I'm a tax auditor for the City of Detroit and I've come across various pro athlete's returns but this was my first (ex) Dallas Cowboy. He only played one game here last year so the audit was for that portion of his income. You all might think it's silly, but I am so giddy right now.:D

That's pretty darn cool.
I bet you weren't expecting that when you came across his paperwork...

Nope. Not at all. I saw his name before Dallas Cowboys, but there aren't many guys named Demarcus Ware so I knew it was him.

and I bet there aren't a lot of people making that much $ either

You got that right. I've come across a few others from every pro sport and every time I see the 7 figures (or more) I say "jock!" and I'm right every time. The irony is that I have never come across a tax return for a Tiger, Red Wing, Piston or Lion, just the visiting players.

So you all tax the players on the per game income even if they are from out of state?

So you have to pay income taxes in every state in which you play a game? That doesn't seem right.

So you are the one the Beatle sang about The Tax man. lol

Yep. I don' think the general public knows this, but when an athlete plays in a particular state, he/she owes taxes in that state. That's why players who make big money hire accountants because if you don't pay, the government of those states/cities can come after you.

Many people who have a home of record in one state but do a job in another state (even if it is for a limited time) have to pay out of state taxes as well.

Don't you think revealing you're a tax auditor for the City of Detroit is giving just a little bit too much information?

They are taxed as contract workers if I recall correctly and not every state has an income tax. The city of Philadelphia also levies taxes on opposing players. I wonder if a player can set up their contract where they get paid $1 when they play in one of these cities/states and more money when they play the other games.

Jock taxes like this are pretty common. The argument is that they are working in the state (or city) - I think only Fl, Tx, and WA don't have one. DC doesn't but that likely doesn't matter as the Washington Football team doesn't play in DC.

That would create situation where suspensions wouldn't be levied fairly - if your game suspension happened during a stretch of games in those areas then you'd have basically zero financial penalty

There is a lot of wasted effort in the world these days.

It seems like there would be simplier methods than having each city auditing ALL athelete's individually that play in that city.

Life would be much simplier with one big Sales Tax. There are other options that would be much easier than having every individual report their earnings.

Good point. The league could change the policy and instead of losing 4 game checks, for example they would lose 25% of their yearly salary.

I would think players would prefer that they have their contract restructured then. Get the bonus at the beginning of the year with a small base pay for the season.
