I just audited Demarcus Ware's tax return!

There is a lot of wasted effort in the world these days.

It seems like there would be simplier methods than having each city auditing ALL athelete's individually that play in that city.

Life would be much simplier with one big Sales Tax. There are other options that would be much easier than having every individual report their earnings.

this is not wasted effort at all. you can imagine detroit was quite happy to take ware's 3 hours worth of tax and fund the OP for all year, lol.

in NYC you pay, city, state and federal. athletes get beat up there.

it is very much like an entertainer who tours.

I know how you feel, @Boyzmamacita. I used to work in the Proof Dept at a bank and came across an error for one of Clyde Drexel's deposit. From that point, I was always checking his acct. I could always tell when he got paid. A BIG deposit was made. lol

Yes you are correct....
California is also pretty bad from what ive heard.

If you work in one state, but your permanant residence is in another state, they will still deduct state taxes, and if not, you are supposed to still file. But you usually get a portion of that amount you pay back on a refund. In some cases possibly almost all of it.

Philadelphia I believe charges pro athletes an "entertainment" tax, or used to, on top of the regular taxes.

So you all tax the players on the per game income even if they are from out of state?

Yes. It's simple for NFL players because they only play one game here (playoff games would be the following year - not that the Lions have many playoff games). It gets complicated for MLB, NHL and NBA players because multiple games are involved and we have to figure out if a guy was on the active roster during each game or whether he was paid even if he wasn't.

Something like that. I just remember there was a time when every player complained about playing in Philly and it wasn't just because of that horrible turf they used to have.

Don't you think revealing you're a tax auditor for the City of Detroit is giving just a little bit too much information?

Word, I'd worry about this thread getting back to the higher ups. There must be a lot of Cowboys fans in Detroit.

Many years ago, and not sure if it still works the same, or if Michighan was trying to pull a fast one.
A friend of mine, we worked together here in Texas. He was from Detroit. Texas does not have a state tax, so no deduction from his check. But my friend had a house in Detroit. They wanted him to pay a state tax on the money he made in Texas. He told them they were full of crap. I never found out the outcome of it though.

Jock taxes like this are pretty common. The argument is that they are working in the state (or city) - I think only Fl, Tx, and WA don't have one. DC doesn't but that likely doesn't matter as the Washington Football team doesn't play in DC.

There are 7 states with no state income tax...

Alaska
Florida
Nevada
South Dakota
Texas
Washington
Wyoming

So you have to pay income taxes in every state in which you play a game? That doesn't seem right.

That is the wa it is everywhere. If you are a consultant working in Tennessee you pay 0%, you go to California 10%, NYC, 10% + Local + City.

The govt gets theirs

I can't give any specifics for obvious reasons, but I'm a tax auditor for the City of Detroit and I've come across various pro athlete's returns but this was my first (ex) Dallas Cowboy. He only played one game here last year so the audit was for that portion of his income. You all might think it's silly, but I am so giddy right now.:D

Force him to return to Dallas for the vet minimum right now!

LOL. I'm still chuckling over this one. I'd ask you if you took a picture but I think maybe you'd better not. Enjoy your glorious moment in the sun my friend! :) Still chuckling. :D

The cynical side of me says, it will never happen because it would work - but lawyers and govt and tax beaurocrats would be less in demand

Tennessee doesn't either.. They do have an income tax on investment/dividend income if greater than 10K/yr
