Emmitt has idea for new name for Commanders

Sorry YR - We'll just have to agree to disagree. It's not about money, it's about what is right. Forcing someone to change something simply because a vocal minority, many of whom share absolutely nothing in common with those "wronged", are upset about it, is NOT right.

It's a Commanders thread, not a politics thread, so that's all I'll say on the matter. No disrespect intended.

Everyone has their own viewpoint as I said before, of what's \right or wrong.

The funny thing about people is, people don't care unless it affects them. Who cares if your kid is bullied, as long as mine isn't. Who cares if someone else is offended by the Commanders, unless they are offending my mom, spouse or child.
It's like calling your spouse stupid, and she gets upset. You say, I didn't mean anything by it I was just being funny. The problem is, you think it's funny but she doesn't. And if she doesn't think it's funny, then it's mean and thoughtless to do it.
Another example.

Maybe they should rename the Dallas Cowboys to the Dallas A**ho***. I wonder how many people would riot for a name change. I'm sure the Giants fans won't care, but we sure would.

It's funny. The critics' contention gets maligned and warped a lot. It is a simple one though. The mascot name offends the vocal Native American critics. Historical tribal names such as Iroquois or Seminoles are rarely (if ever) contentious. It is their name of their ancestors. And cultural progression has outmoded "indians" as a current identifier, just as has been the case for other cultures, domestic or foreign, around the world forever. In other words, cultures routinely retire older monikers for newer ones.

Great post, and I agree 110%. If possible, and with the blessing of Native American groups and organizations, I'd love to see a name that retains the cultural association without being derogatory, e.g., Braves or something along those lines.

This whole debate is just ridiculous. "Commander" is defined in the dictionary as a derogatory term for Native Americans. Who am I, Average Joe Whiteguy, to overrule the dictionary and say "No, it's not derogatory"? Numerous Native American groups have come out and called the team name degrading. (Not all groups, but quite a few.) Again, who am I, Average Joe Whiteguy, to say, "No, you guys are wrong, the use of the name isn't degrading"? That's not "PC policing." The very definition of the word is that it's disparaging.

It's funny, when people challenge the Commanders on the name they say but what about the Chiefs, the Braves, the Seminoles, Warriors, Aztecs, etc....the difference is none of the others are slang words that are derogatory.

Exactly, I challenge anyone who thinks Commanders is not derogatory to walk up to a group of native americans and call them that. You will find out how derogatory it is very quickly.

Don't see Emmitt's suggestion coming close to pacifying the critics, but whatever.

How about the few people that are complaining just not get what they want and shove their request to change the name. This is the USA and anyone should be allowed to name their business even if someone gets their feelings hurt.

Large majority of polls show native Americans don't care.

Something tells me the Commanders wouldn't care to even entertain a suggestion on their name from an ex-Cowboy player, no matter how good (the suggestion, or the player).

Not to mention, Emmitt was a great runningback... but not very bright.
