Chris Carter is Defending Hitchens!

I think it is comical for people to talk about the small jersey hold in the 5 yard area. That happens on every play in the NFL. It is ridiculous to even talk about that IMO. First contact in the hand fighting was by Pettigrew and it was to the facemask. While it was absurd to make the announcement and pick up the flag. Flags get picked up all the time in the NFL and that was a good reversal by someone who had a better angle. Would I be pissed if it was against us sure. Would I be pissed if it was not called looking at the play in replay, not really. I would be more pissed as a fan that we could not go down the field and score and protect my QB.

And when is it within the nfl rules that a wr can grab ahold of a defenders facemask and it not be flagged? Dez coming onto the field without a helmet should have been a penalty.

There is no rule about coming onto the field without a helmet. The rule states that you are not allowed to remove your helmet while in the field of play. Dez did not break that rule. Players come on the field all the time without a helmet. It's just usually not during a controversial call that everyone is paying attention to.

The facemask is irrelevant to whether it was PI or not. You guys are using that to distract from the actual call on the field.

You cannot grab someone's jersey to impede their progress. You cannot make clear substantial contact with the receiver before the ball arrives with your back to the football.

Hitchens did both. It was a penalty.

I agree that there was definitely a jersey grab, that could have been called defensive holding. After many viewings of the replay I still don't see where the clear substantial contact was at.

I loved Carter's explanation - very professional, very clinical, very authoritative...

It's interesting that once the 'emotions' settle down that people like Eric and Terrell Davis are saying the same thing.

Basically - with about 50% of the population loving the Cowboys and about 50% hating them - the haters, like McNabb, are going to cry foul and the lovers are going to cry for joy.

Question is - which side of the population are you in?

Please, you have got to be kidding me. It happens all the time with no flag. People grab arms all the time before the ball gets there. I don't know what NFL you have been watching but the contact Hitchens made after his facemask was grabbed was minimal to what never gets a flag in the NFL. The only difference here was that Hitchens was not looking at the ball which has no bearing on whether a flag should be thrown.

Wow - can't believe what I'm hearing... He's saying:

. It wasn't pass interference
. Face guarding is not a penalty in the NFL like in college ball
. If anything, Pettigrew grabbed Hitchen's facemask
. Pettigrew didn't come back to the ball and could have changed the call if he had - forcing Hitchen's to move into him
. Hitchen's has a right to his space, it was man coverage
. Hitchen's didn't 'gain an advantage' by putting his left hand on Hitchen's
. The trajectory of the ball was flat and if it had been better thrown, then Hitchen's left hand would have impeded Pettigrew

He actually talked Greenie and Golic OUT OF IT!!!

absolutely agree!!

the no helmet has already been rebuked. I do find it funny that when people hear it on tv, or read it elsewhere on the net, it must be true. no need to actually validate facts before shouting them out again.

The reversal was correct.

It was a very clumsy way of handling it which led to the whining.

Absolutely correct. I do think this may lead to PI becoming reviewable.

Also, the whining b/c Dez should have been flagged for coming on the field should stop. That call is rare and really only ever after a warning

I thought the issue was him coming on the field

I don't believe it was PI. I think that if anything, it was illegal hands to the face by the WR or a facemask. That presided the contact by Hitchens IMO. It should have been a no call but the back judge throw the flag so you had to do something.

I don't blame the Lions fans for feeling like they got jobbed on that play because I know that if the situation were reveresed (and believe me, it has been many times) this board would be on suicide watch as well, but I do believe it was the right call.

Sorry. That was PI. Twice. First the jersey grab and then the contact with the shoulder.

We got away with one. I refuse to pretend otherwise.

That's cool.

You can also acknowledge the offensive player grabbing his facemask and pulling him during said play as well.

So, yeah, they got away with one on the same play.

Don't pretend otherwise.

Yes. It was.

No doubt.

Grabbing the facemask and pulling the defender by it is also a penalty.

But I guess it only matters to you that one guy committed a penalty.

if you're talking to who I think you're talking to, why bother? he's never changed his mind, 90% of his posts seem to exist only to make 10+ pages of useless, tired dialog, and he's going to hate everything the cowboys succeed at and tear it down.

outside that he's a pleasure to talk with.
