Free three yr deal per Archer

That wouldn't be a surprise, but lately the Cowboys have been playing their contracts a little more straight-up.

The year three is likely a figure equal to the average pay. The key is that year 3 is really just there to allow us to shove some bonus money

It is 15 mill over 3 btw

I love it. He's got his flaws but this keeps the best OL in football together. Continuity is huge when it comes to an OL and he is considered the leader of the group. I'm ok with a slight overpay here. This OL is the strength of our team and it remains intact. Free should remain solid while the rest of this group is young and can still improve. I'm glad we re-signed Free and Beasley. As long as no team steals Dez this offense should be great again next year regardless of what happens with Murray IMO. Strengthen that D through FA and the draft and we're contending for #6 once again next year.

If it is 15 mil over 3 years, I don't think that's bad from the Cowboys perspective.

LOL!

It could also come down to the cost. When it's all said and done I wouldn't be surprised to see that Parnell ended up with a couple more mill per season strictly because he's the younger guy.

I thought they were both competent.

Agreed. I think it shakes down like that too. I think Washington overpays.

the key figure here is 6 million guaranteed over 3 years...solid deal for the front office

The guaranteed $$ is the critical part of the deal.

Per Todd Archer:

- Cap hit for this year is $3M and the guaranteed money is $6M.

So $15M three year deal w/ $6M guaranteed, it could look something like this:

2015 base = $1M, SB = $2M

2016 base = $3M, SB = $2M

2017 base = $5M, SB = $2M

Even if we cut him next season it's a $4M dead money hit.

Only 6M guaranteed is great news. Enough to get a deal done but not so much that Free could become complacent (IE 2012 season)

Contract sounds good for both the player and the team. Free might not be an all world O lineman, but there were several reports last year about him being a of leader of sorts with all the others being so young on the line. I think it's a good move to keep him around.

Good move and I think it speaks of Garrett's philosophy of RKG's and chemistry. It's the same reason why I lean more towards signing Demarco than not. I just think there is something special between the guys that the organization recognizes and doesn't want to mess with.

Funny how so many have called for his head at various times over the years.

"You're only as strong as your weakest link". God knows he's had some weak links in the chain.

I'd expect some funny money stashed in year three.

I actually don't because I think a three-year deal is one Dallas expects Free to complete. Usually the funny money comes in longer contracts where the player is either trying to get his money and get out after a few years to receive a new deal or the team is trying to spread out a lot of guaranteed money and intends to either renegotiate after a few years or cut the player and take the hit.

Well, there were about two years where he deserved it: one at left tackle and one at right. Then some fans held that against him for another year even though he played well.

Good for the chemistry of the line and offense. At a good deal. Stay healthy Free.
