Cowboys have a three-year deal with Doug Free.

@xwalker have fun watching Parnell on the 2 games Dallas plays the Commanders. And you can tell us how much better he is :)

The guaranteed $$ is the critical part of the deal.

Per Todd Archer:

- Cap hit for this year is $3M and the guaranteed money is $6M.

So $15M three year deal w/ $6M guaranteed, it could look something like this:

2015 base = $1M, SB = $2M

2016 base = $3M, SB = $2M

2017 base = $5M, SB = $2M

Even if we cut him next season it's a $4M dead money hit.

Good deal. I was actually guessing that $6 million guaranteed would be the right amount to give him.

so basically it a 2 year deal because I can't see Dallas paying him $5 mill base for 2017.

LOL!

It could also come down to the cost. When it's all said and done I wouldn't be surprised to see that Parnell ended up with a couple more mill per season strictly because he's the younger guy.

I thought they were both competent.

I doubt it. He's only two years younger. Free is only 31, not that old for an offensive lineman.

Only 6M guaranteed is great news. Enough to get a deal done but not so much that Free could become complacent (IE 2012 season)

I don't get why we think players are complacent when they play poorly. Free's problem is that defenders figured him out and he lost his technique and confidence. He was clearly frustrated by it, and I'm glad he and the coaches got it figured out. Probably the worth thing that ever happened to him was when Dallas moved him to left tackle, although he was OK there his first year.

Sometimes players just develop issues that they cannot figure out how to solve, like Murray's fumbling problems this year. They see themselves as doing the same things they had been doing, but either defenders have figured out how to expose those things or the players have unknowingly made poor adjustments that have caused the issue.

I disagree. Depending on his play, $7 million total is not too much to pay for a solid right tackle.

look at contract. Its $3 million (total) for 2015 and $5 million (total) for 2016. This is a reasonable rate for starting OL and according to everyone involved with Cowboys....he is leader of OL that has changed everything in Dallas. I think they signed him based on his leadership more than his play but he has solidified over the years.

I meant $7 million total for 2017. By the time we get there, the going rate for a starting tackle will be higher, so I don't think the deal is designed to really be a two-year deal. I think Dallas sees him playing the deal out.

If that had been the case, I think, we would have tried to load the final year, with him making $3 million each the first two and $9 million the last. (Of course, I think the breakdown of his contract is just speculation so it's possible it could be built that way.)

I still see them drafting OL maybe 4th round on in draft and that would give them few years to groom replacements. Now onto the Lbs.

Now we need to hit on his replacement in 3rd round of draft and thus works out perfect.
You can find a right tackle even in the fourth or fifth round.

Teams tend to go with OT in the first three rounds who are not limited by the side they play on. If there is a "right tackle only" who is too tall to play guard, you can still find reasonable talent. Free was a fourth round choice, Ricky Wagner a fifth.

excellent deal and what I expected to happen.
free is a leader and wanted to be here more than to test the market.

good for him and the team.

parnell wasnt a problem here but murray rushed for more yards per carry and per game with free at RT.

They could cut him after two seasons, but honestly it looks like it's actually a realistic 3 year contract.

Yep, 3rd round is too high UNLESS there's a guy there who represents an outstanding value.

My condolences to Parnell and his agent (xwalker), as well as Parnell's family (xwalker?)

*Sorry @xwalker .. just having a little fun at your expense. Just paying you back for saying that I would be on suicide watch after Aaron Donald was picked by someone else.

I don't agree with that.

Depends on his play.

If he's still solid in 2016, I don't think a $5 mill base is unrealistic.

Cowboys seem to be getting their 'ducks in a row' with this signing. Let's hope the $$ commitment isn't too hurtful, though. Free's signing ensures continuity for the time being, at least.

Gotta believe the C'boys responded by signing the RT who was doing the best job in the end. Free stepped up.
Parnell did admirably well in replacing Free when he did but the job Free did in run blocking was evidently something that Parnell couldn't quite match. The staff definitely made the right choice, imho.

For a competent RT I don't think you're going to get away with spending much less.
